Rescue

We had lost in the fire all our hope for salvation

Had left them burning, slowly, sickly, on the banks

Watched them dissolve into ash, black and weak

While we scattered this way and that way

Clutching to life rafts that were sinking

Spilling out dreams and desires into the river

Polluting the blue with bleak and grey
