Remus paused at the door to the guest room of his cottage, knocking gently. Sirius had been in bed all day, and as much as Remus felt that he should let the man get his rest, the sun was about an hour from setting and Sirius still hadn't emerged from the room so much as to even use the loo. Hesitating, Remus knocked gently on the door. "Sirius?" he ( Read more... )

It had been ridiculously long since he'd been able to sleep in a bed. Not his dingy little cot in Azkaban, not the stone of the caves near Hogsmeader, not the wet sand of a beach. A bed. It was such a stupid, simple thing, but when he'd first laid down on the guest room mattress, he'd wanted to sink into it like a rock and never emerge. Having an actual pillow and a blanket was like telling him he could have Christmas every day of the year.

He reluctantly opened his eyes at Remus' voice, looking up at the other man groggily. "Morning, Remus," he said half-heartedly, wondering what time it was. It wouldn't surprise him if he'd slept for days straight.

Remus sat forward, propping his head on his hand on the edge of the bed and smiling gently down at the Sirius. Try as he may, he couldn't quite take his hand off of the other man's shoulder, and instead moved to rub it gently, rather than shaking him awake like he'd been before.

"...it's half past four, Sirius," he said, as quietly and gently as he was smiling down at the other man. "I'm afraid you've missed the morning altogether. And the afternoon, for that matter..."

Sirius probably could have laid there for another full day, coasting through dreamless sleep while Remus rubbed his shoulder like that. The truth was that life on the lam had been exhausting, even if it was still miles better than existence in Azkaban.

"If you let me sleep a few more hours, it'll be morning all over again," he said, not quite making the move to get up quite yet, barely grinning at Remus. Despite everything, he could still be cheeky when he wanted to be. "Eventually."

Remus let out a quiet chuckle, continuing to rub Sirius's shoulder more out of something to do, comforting himself while doing it, reassuring himself that the other man was safe and sound and staying in his guestroom and supposedly staying with him for the next while, and oh. How he'd missed Sirius.

He shook his head, continuing to smile down at him. "If that's what you want, then I can leave you to it. I just figured that I should check in on you and you know. Make sure you were alright, see if you needed anything. Food, water, more blankets...?" he asked.
