Yes, you'll have shorter days in the winter, but the evenings in the summer will stay light longer. I like that about the summer in northern latitudes, but I don't like the short days in the winter. I'm picky. I like my longer days in the winter - which are too damn short to please me.
I think the only way I'd be truly happy would be to live in the north in the summer and below the equator in our winter. (grin)
It's great that you're finding places that are easy to shop. I hate Walmart, but sometimes it's the only place here that has the crap we need.

And, yes, during the summer you'll have longer days. It stays light here in Michigan until after 9p during the height of summer.
