As a male 5'9" and around 230#, my guess is that you'd find an XL to be long in the arms and legs, and tight (perhaps a little too much so) in the thigh and perhaps the chest. Plain nylon/lycra is pretty forgiving though, so I'm inclined to believe you could make it work, and you might even get into a large without too much trouble. In general I think the rule is that height is more important than width since seams don't stretch well.

Oh, and yes, in my experience the metallics are less stretchy. I prefer the plain variety as I find that they feel nicer, and while the shiny suits start out looking very tasty, they quickly wear out. They also breathe a lot more easily making them considerably more comfortable to wear. Part of what I like about zentai is that as fetishwear goes, it's awfully comfortable to wear regardless of body type.
