As has become the patern of my life I am in a downward spiral. This is not really anything new since I typically have long periods of depression that simply will not let go no matter how much I want them to. However this time I have every intent of beating it back

Your image as in physical or do you mean in a metaphorical sense? I'm all for metaphors but I don't want to think too deep into it, as I'm want to do:)
