I just wanted to let you know that I've really been enjoying reading your "insider's view" on the progress of the swine flu in Japan. I've been reading a lot of news reports about the flu in Japan and other countries and it is interesting to compare the way different governments react. Take China, for example. They immediately rounded up all the Mexican people even if they weren't sick.

H's mother is a school superintendent in Oregon and so I asked her what the procedures are for dealing with infectious diseases in the schools in the US. Having teachers get their temperature tested twice a day sounds excessive to me, but perhaps it is effective. I kind of got to wondering how the teacher's union might respond to this sort of thing. I know there is a very powerful teacher's union in the US, is there something like that in Japan?

We're back to normal on Monday! Well, normal in that we have kids again (Oh man I hear you on wanting to teach and see your students! This week has been difficult...), but I still have to wear my (increasingly decorated) masks to and from school, as well as in both morning and afternoon daycare, when I give feedback to the parents, and anytime I step outside the school. We also have to disinfect the tables and door....handles? (what do you call the little grabby thingies on the sliding doors? They're not exactly doorknobs...) before Circle Time, before Lunch, after Lunch, and after Goodbye Circle Time. And keep a record of doing it, which will be posted in the classroom.

Also: Silly Lydia! Don't you know that it's not a fever until it's 37.5?

i got that drilled into my head when i started the kindergarten thing
