THIS IS NOT JUST YOU. Even in my one class where the kids are buttheads, if a word card falls or something, one or two kids will SPRING INTO ACTION IMMEDIATELY. It's nice, but sheesh.
I think it must be a more Japanese thing than a universal thing. When I dropped chalk in my classes in China my students didn't feel the need to comment on it or rush to pick it up. Like you said, there's tons of chalk on the floor and it's just more efficient to sweep it all up afterwards than to do it piece by piece.
