I don't want to overexcite anyone but there is a real possibility that today I am going to finish that behemoth, that 1222-page monster, that obscure compendium of all the French Revolution(s)'(s) greatest hits, full of twists and turns like the 128-mile Parisian sewer; that story with beaucoup de side characters whose life histories are divulged ( Read more... )

I got nothing. I dislike Hugo's massive prose. JE SUIS UNE MECREANTE. :>

I decided I really dislike his massive prose, too. So unnecessary. I don't care if that's just how people DID novels back then, I will have no part of it.

Wow, that's awesome! I read about half of it nearly two years ago and then the project I was reading it for fell apart and so did my time to do so. I would definitely like to start again though. Les Mis is my second favorite musical and the only one I've seen live, so I have a special attachment to it. :D

It's quite the investment. I started reading it for the first time when I was 11 or so. At that time, it was hard enough for me to keep the thread of the plot itself, much less grasp at anything deeper. Which is not to say that this time around I fell down gasping at the deep philosophical significance he seemed to want to impart with everything, even and especially sewers...

I'm very curious about the musical. I know many are fans. I have a hard time imagining what such a thing would be like, because I've only ever been exposed to the book and one fairly lame movie adaptation.

The musical's pretty awesome. I think they kind of get rid of a lot of the random characters and make the story into one big arc about Valjean's journey (and Marius and Cosette and Javert and Eponine too, of course). ;) Which movie adaptation? I've only seen the one with Liam Neeson.
