Dunno if it's still pertinent, but when I was there, Caltech was a very fine place to work, as work environments go, and since you were looking at the UC's and so forth, it's worth keeping an eye on.

Caltech keeps listing interesting jobs, but not quite willing to commute to Pasadena from West L.A. (mere miles from coast) ... freeway is well under 10 mph for substantial stretches from 6:30 a.m. on, and also not quite willing to just move closer (I spent a quarter century in Pasadena, and still have and use Pasadena and Altadena library cards monthly) and have the commuting problem with additional coastal friends.
But may be a lot less determined or more picky next month.
Yes, THAT Bruce introduced me to roleplaying games and APAs which almost immediately thereafter introduced me to SF fandom.
