TRADING TALISMANS

Jun 01, 2010 09:14

I came across my old Medicine Bag yesterday, hidden behind layers of forgotten necklaces and pendants: strands of shells, wooden and ceramic beads, an ancient Chinese coin, and sundry carved stones strung on cords of leather or silk.  The sueded black leather of the Medicine Bag was dusty, the neck cord hardened from age.  The contours of the once- ( Read more... )

What a charming piece of writing. I can identify with keeping odd bits of debris & stuff, although not in a medicine bag but strewn around my study. From where I'm sitting I see a heart-shaped stone from who knows where, a piece of rock from Petra, a desert rose that someone brought for me from the US, two huge wild boar tusks, the head of a marbel angel I picked up in a cemetery, an ancient key, couple of shells from different beach holidays and a piece of glass picked up on Paternoster beach. I think, for me at least, one remembers better through the visual - holding these pieces in my hand bring back memories and they'll still be around, these things, maybe not here but somewhere else, long after I'm gone....

I LOVE your collection. I'm much the same: feathers, bits of interesting rock, colored leaves a friend sends me from Canada... nothing quite as interesting as the marble angel head from the cemetery. That one I love. These are things we pick up or are given are the things that are precious. Great to find someone else who GETS IT !!

These I snapped especially for you as someone who treasure found objects.

LOL (It's cold in South Africa - we don't get snow but it's nearly mid-winter and I HATE this time of year)

LOVE the pictures. I adore the way you collect and keep ! I'm huge on shells and bits of rock that feel good in my hand. I also have a cigarette holder ( a case ) from circa WWII. It was my father's (&/or Grandfather's). It's sterling, purchased in India I think. There is a camel with rider and two palm trees engraved on the front. The pewter pitchers/vases? are lovely too.

It's over 100 degrees F here. Will be between 102 and 105 for the next few days. We'll have very few days under 100 (or high 90s) from now until the end of Sept. Arizona is the cure for South African winter blues :)
