This is a gorgeous review and I agree with all of it, including the flaw regarding captain anerica himself. Anthony Mackie called this avengers 2.5 and I think that's actually a much better title than cap 3. This movie was about the avengers- and Bucky ( ... )

It was so good, A! Hardly a foot put wrong in the entire two-and-a-half hours.

I particularly liked that when tony read Steve's letter, it was clear to me, anyway, that he doesn't hate Steve. Maybe Bucky but even that could fade. He's angry because of his mom and rightfully so- but there no sense that he has an ever lasting grudge and hatred for Steve. That he's just...getting old and tired and hating once again that there's a new way for him to be hurt. It's a fine distinction but it's a necessary one, because it opens the door on both sides to come back. They're still friends. There's still love.

A+++ to this comment.

This was a complete story from outside plot to inside characterization. The problem is it's not *finished*. It won't be until the last two avengers movies.Yes, and that's perfectly ok with me. I'll happily be back to watch the end ( ... )

They don't actually address it until the scene with Steve and Tony, when Tony says that he and Pepper are on a break. In the opening sequence there's just a comment from a PA apologizing for not correcting the teleprompter in time.

The way they used young!RDJ's face in there was kind of amazeballs.

Also - I forgot to mention your point about Tony and Peter. That was the only time all movie Tony felt and acted like Tony... but with a new level of reserve. He wasn't word-vomiting just to word-vomit. There was a goal: entice the new guy but also not give him too much information, to protect him. I'd love to see him be more of a mentor for Peter but with the ongoing Sony v Marvel fight to the death, I doubt it ( ... )

It was, but I did notice some changes. Downey used to have very full, pouty lips when he was in his 20s - which he did not have in that CGI rendering. Maybe he was getting collagen injections back in the 90s. ;)

I'd love to see him be more of a mentor for Peter but with the ongoing Sony v Marvel fight to the death, I doubt it.

Perhaps not so unlikely! The two studios are teaming up on the next Spidey outing, and Variety reports that Downey will be in it. YAY.

Tony says that he and Pepper are on a break

Well, that will leave Tony free for the inevitable hookup with Aunt May. :D Did you know that RDJ and Marisa Tomei used to date, back in the day?

the "you know that old movie" line? PERFECTION.

IT REALLY WAS. So awesome, for all the reasons you pointed out.

Love your review.

So true on Steve's character development.

Love the point about Tony being out of control, and esp how he wants to be the mentor to Peter that he never had - you're right, they are similar.

Thank you! The Tony/Peter scene was one of the best in the movie. Honestly, for all that the big fight scenes were fun and well done, it was the quiet moments that really won me over.

Great review! I agree with you on Steve's character arc- they could've done better with that but otherwise it was perfect. RDJ is such an amazing actor, I love him in everything he's in.

I've loved RDJ since I was a wee fangirl. Did you know that he and Aunt May dated briefly, once upon a time?

Oh I didn't know that!! But then when I went to google it, I did know they were in Only You together, totally forgot that was her! It's been so long since I've seen that movie.

RDJ was just fantastic here. I think Tony's story overall through all these movies is by far my favorite and I love how he's grown and changed.

Despite his decision in that film, eight years ago, to stop manufacturing weapons, young people are still dying at Tony's hands - and he can't live with it anymore.

Exactly this. No matter how hard he fights, how many people he saves, death at the hands of Stark tech keeps haunting him.

Tony isn't always the most sympathetic character in the 'verse, but I love him anyway. :)

LOVE THIS REVIEW, VERY WELL PUT.

Yes, one thing that was brilliant was how every POV made sense and every character was allowed to shine. And yes, Black Panther was awesome.

And YES TONY. I really feel he's come full circle. I do think he's got much of the wearyness in Iron Man 3 and Age of Ultron too though, I think it's just hidden under his frenetic NEED to make things; the world, safe.

I loved Steve's arc, but I can see what you're saying. I think maybe Steve staying still is almost the point. He may be the title character, but I don't think he was the main character, and I think this was partly what allowed every character to have its place.

OH YES, the fight scene, brilliant and hilarious. And I adored the contrast between the one where they were trying very hard not to hurt each other and the end fight scene where they were trying to kill each other. Especially seeing the different strategies they use accordingly.

I have watched twice already. Will be watching again though.

I adored the contrast between the one where they were trying very hard not to hurt each other and the end fight scene where they were trying to kill each other.

It was brilliant that they put the "big" battle scene in the middle, and left the small, personal fight for the end. The emotional stakes were so much higher in the final fight; it made it that much more gripping to watch.

Yes, EXACTLY, it made it so much more evocative
