Wow. That episode was creepy as fuck, but it had some of the best character development we've seen on this show.
This is the most backstory we've seen for Vincent, and I found it riveting. Yusuf Gatewood is just so good, and I loved the flashbacks with him and Eva. And it was awesome was it to see Maisie Richardson-Sellers again. The whole storyline foreshadows what Klaus is about to go through with Hope: in his frantic efforts to protect her, he might very well end up destroying her.
How cute were the scenes with Klaus and Hope together? The awkwardness, the painting together, the slow bonding over flowers and butterflies... and his face when she finally hugged him. They were adorbs.
I loved Klaus's goodbye scene with Rebekah. I'm always sorry to see Claire Holt go, but as she said, it's just "goodbye for now." Klaus's recognition that his place now is with his daughter is probaby the most self-awareness we've seen out of him, ever. I think his imaginary therapy sessions with Cami while he was in captivity did him some good. ;)
Also loved Rebekah's line: "True love continues to elude me. But I'm sure there's an app for that now." HEEEEE. If only it were so.
Of course, Marcel's determination to protect children would be the one thing that would convince him to let the Originals come back to New Orleans. Perfectly in character.
LOL at Vincent sending a message to the Originals by conjuring a piece of paper in Hope's pocket. Suck it, texting! Magic has rendered you obsolete.
It's also great the way that Haley has become the matriarch of the family. She tells them what they're doing and both Klaus and Elijah shut up and stop arguing about it. Elijah's besotted with her and Klaus respects her judgement when it comes to Hope, so she can basically boss them both around. I approve.
I like Haley/Elijah in principle, but that sex scene was just... not sexy? It's nice to see them both happy - and from a story perspective, their relationship gives Elijah more motiviation to stick around. But the actors just have no chemistry together. I'm not sure why, because they're both beautiful people... I just find them kind of boring as a couple.
I did like the scene, though, where they both try to convince each other that they're good people. Um, NO, you're not. You have a werewolf chained up in the barn that says otherwise. Yes, they've done some good things, and their hearts are occasionally in the right place, like when Haley lets Keelin go. But all it takes is a threat to the family, and they're back on the murder spree trail.
That's the whole crux of this family - they put their own above everybody else. In some ways, it's not that different to what humans do when threatened; but the Originals have far more power than anyone else (except Marcel, now) and they have no compunction about abusing it when it serves their ends. That's... pretty much the definition of evil and oppression.
Which is great for the viewer. As Keelin says, evil is people doing bad things for good reasons. But it can sure make for interesting television.
