this has some promise (spoilers for Southland)

So TNT had a "Southland" marathon on yesterday when I got home...gearing up for the TNT premiere of new episodes. I tried watching the pilot when it aired on NBC and had a hard time getting into, but as I was watching (on and off) the more I liked it. Well, I actually have two words ( Read more... )

fandom; tv: southland; loci

I find it pretty easy to tell when someone likes one or the other more, no matter how little it is, but one of the things that surprised me most getting into the fandom *was* how many liked them close-to-equally. And also how many preferred KE.

Southland sounds cool; I might have to check that out once I work my way through Doctor Who. I'm a little nervous to be bereft of an active fandom myself; I think I'm going to try to get into steampunk. Part of me does want to keep on watching CI (I'm definitely still going to write for it, but I'm not thrilled about watching) because JG is pretty cool, and the new cast members mean that this will be a female-heavy cast. But I'm also wary of this awesome tough new female cast revolving entirely around Nichols' character arcs, which would just be RAGE for me.

KE definitly wins you over once you start watching it, because really she has alwyas had the much harder job and has done it incredibly well. Maybe my observation is more of a recent thing...I mean there have always been the VDO hard core fans that pretty much watch scrictly for him and even though they may like KE she wouldn't keep them watching and thats cool. But it seems after last season alot of the equals have shifted to KE and I mean I get it -- he was lifeless, but the acting wasn't the only lifeless thing last season. Can anyone say Walon Green?

I guess I don't understand how one season can discredit a character or actor you once liked. *shrugs*

Count me as one who likes both Goren AND Eames. (You might not know this, but my username started as a joke, actually. :D I was making fun of a group who called themselves Goren's Gals. They made membership cards and everything. Silly.) Anyway, I have been seriously missing the old show these past two seasons. Sorry, but there it is. I loved Logan/Barek and Logan/Wheeler...and I can like Nichols, but the quality of the show would have to improve if I'm going to continue with it after G/E/R/W ( ... )

Yeah...see Leno at ten was just all around a fail waiting to happen. lol.

Oh and I love the theme music too to Southland.

And Yes the quality of CI is just so sad...I like JG, but I don't really care for Nichols or these new writers...so I'll be going bye-bye from watching...still planning to write...

You know, I didn't watch Southland when it first came on because I was sick and tired of cop shows. My mom kept telling me it was good, but it just never happened. But leave it to NBC to cancel it, and TNT to pick it up. TNT has shown in its programming that it knows there is a market for strong female characters of any race and for more diversity on television period. So yay them.

I will say, I never quite expected the KE love I encountered when I dipped my toe in LOCI fandom. I suppose it's natural, to want to identify with the female half of the crime-fighting duo, but I honestly believe and will debate (another time when I have brain cells) with anyone that Eames's character was not as developed as it could have been. *shrug* my two, nothing more.

As for LOCI ending, the show has been steadily getting worse over the past two seasons, and I for one am ready to say good-bye.

I actually agree with just about everything you're saying here...down to TNT in regard to female characters.

I am quite ready to CI to go the way of ol'yeller...I think I have a "they shoot horses" mentality, but what makes me kind of sad is I feel like the fandom is suddenly fighting for purchase and I still want to my fix through fandom and I'm just not getting it (except for the occasional and sparse high quality stories...see -- if an AU interests you there is a great WIP with Eames as hooker...I can explain more later).

And I agree about Eames not being a fully devloped character. She was very much written to be more of a counterpart to Goren, but I think those of us who really connect to her, see the potential in her character because it is there, IMO. And I think that's why a lot of us bring her out so much in fandom is because we want to rectify the lack of fine polishing and turn her into the kiss ass female we see that she CAN be.

I love both Goren and Eames equally, too. I've joked I have a girl crush on Eames - or KE as it were. lol

I want the show to end, too. It will once KE & VDO leave. What's left is not even a reasonable facsimile.
