Bourbon was the first drink she had with Joe. They had gone to a bar and without asking he ordered it for her. It pissed her off more than a little, but then he smirked at her sour face and sweetly said, “Humor me.” After a few drinks, their conversation was fun; easy and she quickly let down her guard. They laughed about one of their academy instructors and his horrid sweat stains. Then they talked about growing up with their cop fathers and how differently their perspective mothers had dealt with it.

They drank and made out a little at the bar before hailing a cab. It was the first time she ever slept with a guy on a first date, but she barely left his apartment afterwards. Two years later, on their wedding night, Joe ordered a bottle of bourbon as opposed to the requisite bottle of champagne and they settled into their hotel room drinking and making love most of the night.

Thirteen years later, she sat in the same bar, nursing a glass of bourbon alone and tried not to think about her argument with Bobby. She wondered when he had infiltrated this tradition, when it became a burden as opposed to a need, a honor, a wake for her marriage. In another ten years would she still come here? Would she be in a nursing home with a walker and still feel the obligation to journey out to this bar alone to remember all the things she was afraid she was forgetting? Or would she finally have a new tradition? She was getting tired of holding on.

It was the first time she didn’t stay there for hours, staring at the empty glass she had longed finished and refusing any refills. She walked in the cool air to Bobby’s apartment, needing to explain, needing him to forgive her for picking the fight that morning, and hoped he’d catch her if she let go.
