The Non-Hippie Evils of High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Jan 04, 2009 17:00

So I, like most people who have at some point lived in the Bay Area, have been barraged with anti-corn syrup slogans for the past couple of months. "Do you KNOW what it does to your LIVER?!?!?!" and other similar videos come to mind ( Read more... )

My mom buys all organics and I agree completely with you. There is no way to tell whether that carrot was grown without pesticides. In addition to that, what about the prices? It probably costs more money to grow organics (although I can't imagine why) but if it's better for us shouldn't it be cheaper? Now I have to spend an insane amount of money on something I'm not even positive is actually "organic"! And it's really stupid how bread and cheese and other products are dyed to be certain colors. Are people not going to eat cheddar if it's not orange? I guess the answer is yes ( ... )

I could go on forever about the food most of the world consumes. In fact, even after writing this post Mike and I had a lengthy conversation about the issue with most people in this country: people just don't know what's healthy and what's not! It's not hard science for the most part, it just takes reading the packaging and noticing that although most people assume that muffins are healthier than donuts or mcdonald's, it's not true. Those big packaged muffins that you see in grocery stores have 52 grams of fat per muffin. 52!!! That is more than the biggest big mac. And seriously, if I'm going to be eating 52 grams of fat, I'd much rather take the burger which at least has some protein ( ... )

hehe Salads are my life! How can you say that? LOL. Nah, in all seriousness I could (and alot of the times do) eat salad everyday for lunch. But I eat real lettuce like Romaine or Red Leaf (not ICEBERG--which fyi you can't even feed to Rabbits, lol). I am a Kale ADDICT. I could eat Kale with no dressing right off the stem, and I practically do. I stick with oil and vinegar dressing unless I have no other choice and am stuck with an astronaut bag, lol. But on a regular basis I use Red Wine Vinegar. No oil, just the Vinegar. Which unlike Ranch or Thousand Island dressing which people pile on to loose weight, Red Wine Vinegar has a bunch of zero's in the nutrition facts. I also load my salad up with anything I've got. Broccoli, olives, peppers, cauliflower, grilled chicken, whatever. :)

Yes, I'm a rabbit. And I don't eat iceberg. :P

I don't know if you like Dr. Pepper, but there is exactly one bottling plant that still makes it with actual cane sugar instead of HFCS; it's in Dublin, TX. Ought not to be too hard to find down there, Whole Foods, Central Market and even Tom Thumb (mainest of the mainstream) have it here. It's so worth it.

I've heard of that, actually. Mike goes on about it all the time. Dr. Pepper isn't my favorite soda, I'm especially partial to coke, but I do still like it. I definitely am going to try it sometime!

Wow, your post is super inspirational. I've read stuff like this in the past, and have done little things to change my diet before, but I think I'll try just a little bit harder to cut more processed foods... :D ( ... )

I have read Stuff that White People Like, and I also have the book! I think that part of the joke of the site is that a lot of people tend to buy into this stuff because it's trendy not because it's based on science, which is something that irritates me. People should READ for themselves and make informed decisions, versus cutting something out of their diet purely because someone else said it was "cool" to ( ... )

You are so right on the sugar thing. I can't believe people consume so much of that stuff. Also, you guys should totally just make your own peanut butter with a food processor or something... heheh =)

I'm also pretty skeptical about diets that are 100% anything (ie, raw, no carbs, etc) because it's true your body needs a little of everything. It's more of a matter of proportioning it such that you get more of the good stuff and less of the stuff you think is good because it tastes delicious (like sugars and fats).

When are you gonna be moving? I'm super excited you guys are gonna grow your own produce! I'll give you all the gardening tips I can... I don't know a lot, but I know it's a lot of work! XD

Amen to that. :D Balance is really the key. That's how I feel about coke. I like it too much to cut it from my diet entirely, but I treat it as a desert because I can't eat any other deserts like cake or cookies or chocolate (other than TINY pieces occasionally), so I figure I'm due one treat every couple of weeks. :P

We're probably moving sometime later this year. Maybe this summer? :D

You bring up a good point that I wanted to make up there in my "article," lol: food being processed isn't the evil, it's what they're putting in it. Obviously the stuff I'm getting from whole foods is processed as well - it surely wasn't made on site, and so SOME factory somewhere made it. But they chose to keep out the nasty. I hope that eventually the rest of the American food scene will do the same, but until then, I'm learning how to make my own breads and tortillas! :D

Try the 100% whole wheat bread from whole foods if you see it - that's exactly what it's called and it's SUPER TASTY!! :D

I also hate those ads where you have some idiot be all like "durrr high fructose corn syrup is bad!" and some slightly-lesser idiot be all "durrrr it's made of CORN! HELLO!?" and the bigger idiot shuts up and eats.

Yeesh.

Yeah, I've seen those, too. I think that doing anything purely because someone told you something was bad is retarded. I have no idea if any of that other stuff is true - most likely, it's only caused by eating too much sugar, not by something inherent in HFCS itself. People are just retarded when it comes to knowing what's healthy and what's not. ;)
