“Hae!”
The brunet-haired guy was about to enter his car but stopped into a halt when he heard someone called his name. A tall muscular guy was scooting toward his direction, his smile getting even wider as he approached the brunet.
“What is it Siwon?” he said as he closed his convertible’s door back, leaning his side to the front door of it with his arms folded in front of his chest.
“Just want to remind you about the get-together thingy in Heechul’s hyung house tonight.” He smiled at Donghae which Donghae replied with a snort. “I’m not the one who you should remind up.” He idly answered. “I won’t forget.” said Donghae as he opened the door again and slipped into the luxurious convertible.
“See you later then!” Siwon beamed, half shouting, before Donghae closed the door and drove off.
**
“You definitely need a girlfriend.” A red-faced Heechul, who was also Donghae’s cousin, muttered absentmindedly, one hand holding a glass of red wine. He was clearly drunk and kept slurring his words. “ -or a boyfriend. Like me. Like us.” He swayed his free hand to his surrounding, where their best friends were sitting comfortably on the couch; playing games, talking, and for some, eating each other faces.
“You need to get laid, hyung!” Ryeowook chirped from his side, grinning widely and staring at Donghae as if Donghae had grown some brown spots on his skin like a giraffe, his favorite animal. A contradiction to his innocent and childish look he adopted, he’s one of Donghae’s so called friend who got the dirtiest mind. Not to mention the one who’s good in drinking alcohol too.
Donghae groaned and dropped his head back against the couch. “Go away.” He shoved Ryeowook off the couch with his right foot, which made the latter landed on the carpeted floor with a soft thud. Ryeowook pouted and quickly gripped Donghae’s leg and bit it.
“ -the fuck Wook!!” Donghae yelped in pain, stood up abruptly and accidentally bumped his knees on Ryeowook’s head.
“That hurts!” the smaller guy yelled to Donghae, still sitting on his previous spot on the carpeted floor.
Donghae snickered and plopped on the couch in front of Ryeowook. “Served you right.” He replied to the smaller guy while his hand rubbing the part where Ryeowook had bitten before.
“It’s pretty weird, though. You got brain, looks, money... Well, quite frigid and lack of manner I may add. But seriously, with those things you got, why you still have no girlfriend or a boyfriend? You know many people would kill to be your lover.” a gloomy Yesung appeared out of nowhere, holding his turtle with his tiny hands and sat beside Ryeowook.
“What did you just do with it?” Donghae asked and craned his neck to take a better look at the turtle, trying to change the topic of their conversation.
“I just fed him cereal.” Yesung answered. Donghae knitted his eyebrows in confusion. Cereal? Turtle eats cereal?
“Oh.” was all Donghae could say with eyebrows still knitting together on his forehead.
“You’re trying to change the topic.” Ryeowook said matter-of-factly.
Donghae heaved a deep sigh and stood up. “I don’t know, okay. So stop asking me that fucking question.” He shook his head and threw an irritated glare to every single person in the room.
To Heechul (who was completely dozed off and resting his head on Hankyung’s lap), Hankyung, Yesung, Ryeowook (he cuddled to Yesung’s side and stroking the turtle’s shell together with Yesung), Siwon (who was holding a bible and draped his arm around Kibum’s shoulders), and a lazy-looking Kibum. Getting no response and attention in return, he decided to slump back on the couch.
“All of you got your lovers already and I’m the only one single.” He mumbled exasperatedly, not expecting a real answer from his friends who were currently having their own little worlds.
To his surprise, Hankyung -the quietest one among all of them- looked up and said, “Don’t worry, you will find one soon. Maybe it’s just about time.” He smiled at Donghae and assured him.
Donghae clucked his tongue and ran a hand through his hair. “It’s always easier said than done. It's always been like that.”
**
Donghae was perfect. Well, almost perfect. He could get high flying scores without even had to struggle through distressing efforts. He’s handsome, he’s the only son of the richest businessman in Seoul, he simply could grasp anything he wanted just by flicking his hand and some simple words from his mouth.
But he’s also an oddball. He attended classes he didn’t even submit for the semester, and went through the whole class as if nothing was wrong. He didn’t care. He had never been care. The school principal could do nothing with that and just let him be, knowing Donghae’s parent was one of the main source for the school’s viability to keep alive.
If there was ever a croissant on the lunch menu of the day, he would only eat half of the croissant and disposed the other half to the bin right after he finished eating. He’s the only one who drove a car - a convertible to make it clear - to school. Other high schoolers always went to school by public transportations or by foot, and for some who had no problem with money, were chauffeured to school.
His personality might not as bright as the sunshine like many people wanted him to be. Such outer display was definitely nowhere to be found in Donghae to complement his plus side he already had. Talking straight to the point and carelessly was part of him. This one thing and those odd habits only had people assuming that he was indeed weird. Funny how just because of outer look and odd habits people could judge you hard despite all good things you have.
He wouldn’t pay too much attention to things or people around him. No matter how many times you would mention your name in front him, if he didn’t have any interest for you, he would never remember your name; even though you met and talked to him every single day.
Today, just like any other days, he was escaping one of his class which name he couldn’t remember, and was taking a nap in an empty music room when suddenly, someone burst into the room and closed the door with a quite loud bang. Donghae sat up groggily, still not completely conscious, and focusing his eyes to the door.
There stood a panting guy, holding books close to his chest. After seconds of adjustment to his surrounding, Donghae could finally catch a better sight of the guy. Despite the dim light of the room, he could see the red hair of the guy, whose now already dropped to his knees and curling himself into a ball.
“Who are you?” Donghae said from the dark corner he occupied every time he took a nap. He claimed that deserted corner as his, and he would sometimes just lean his back against the wall, or simply just lied on the floor sleeping. That was one of his queerness people knew about.
The red-haired guy was startled and stood up abruptly. His eyes widened in shock when he saw Donghae’s figure coming near. He backed up slowly, until his back collided with the cold wall. He clutched his books closer and scrunched his eyes shut.
Donghae tilted his head to the side as he read the name on the book’s front cover. Lee Eunhyuk.
..Eunhyuk? This name sounds familiar.. Donghae thought inwardly as he rubbed his chin with his fingers, pondering how such name could stay familiar in his mind.
“Ah! You’re that mute guy Heechul had told me before.” He flicked his fingers, looking up and down on Eunhyuk. The guy was cringing in fear; it was obvious that he was afraid of Donghae. This guy was a perfect target for the bullies in school. With his mute state, what more could those bullies ask? Donghae smirked as his eyes were still locked to Eunhyuk’s wavering ones. Donghae hated people who bullied others, but he also hated weak people, particularly those who couldn’t even defend their selves; just like this one in front of him at the moment.
“Too weak.” He smirked as he headed to the door, brushing their shoulders together in the process and made Eunhyuk flinched.
**
When it snows at night, it’s silent everywhere and the sky turned a shade of dark orange; Donghae would always love to stroll around. He used to go into his bedroom and burried himself under his warm-soft blanket when it’s snowing - that happened when he was a kid, before his parents moved to Tokyo for their business and left a 10 year old Donghae alone in Seoul with his grandparents because said boy didn’t want to move along to Tokyo, but that's an entirely different story.
He was walking another block of buildings when he passed a dark secluded alley and heard a faint sound coming from it. His stomach was tingling with curiosity, and so he slowly and carefully stepped into the dark alley and hid himself under the dark shade of the night. As he got closer and closer, he could see three people trapping a thin, weak-looking guy to the ending wall of the alley.
One of the guys, which Donghae assumed to be the leader of the three, lifted his hand and strangled thin guy’s neck in a death grip, making the latter choked and gasping for air.
“What are you guys doing?”
The guy, who was currently strangling the thin guy’s neck, froze when they heard Donghae’s voice. There’s no way they couldn’t not acknowledge whose voice it was, as they often got kicked in the ass for no reason by the certain voice owner. Yes, indeed he was weird like that.
“D-Donghae..” the guy with the biggest muscular build among the three turned slowly and gulped when he saw Donghae standing on the entrance of the secluded alley.
“Leave him alone.” He said with a dangerous tone. The guys knew well of what would happen if they ever refused Donghae’s order and so they hurriedly scurried off, leaving the trembling and scared thin guy on the alley alone with Donghae.
Donghae took a few steps towards the guy and squatted down in front of him. He was startled when he finally got a clear look of the thin guy’s face. It was Eunhyuk.
He lifted his hand and was about to touch Eunhyuk’s shoulder when the latter flinched and tried to avoid the touch. Eunhyuk curled himself into a ball, hiding his head in between his knees, arms covering the top of his head. Eunhyuk’s body tensed when he felt a pair of hands on his shoulder. Slowly and nervously Eunhyuk lifted his face up only to meet Donghae gaze pricking directly into his eyes. “Are you okay?” Donghae asked nonchalantly.
Eunhyuk just kept his mouth shut and stayed motionless like a rock, which made Donghae sighed desperately. He knew Eunhyuk was mute, but having a two-way communication like this with the said person was quite..frustrating to say the least. Maybe it’s because Donghae had never talked or communicated with a mute person before. No, he did communicate with Eunhyuk before, but it’s not like he needed an answer that time.
Donghae rolled his eyes and glared at the trembling guy. “Are you okay?” he asked again, stressing the last word intentionally to emphasize that he needed an answer, not an unmoving statue. Eunhyuk gulped and hesitantly nodded.
“Good. Now come with me.” Donghae ordered, pulling Eunhyuk onto his feet and was about to drag the other guy to wherever his mind wanted to when suddenly he felt a light tug on his hand which was gripping Eunhyuk’s wrist.
Eunhyuk bit his lips and stared at Donghae confusedly. He looked panic when Donghae just growled and continued dragging him along. But Donghae stopped dragging him when he felt Eunhyuk refused to move and insisted to root on his place. Donghae turned and threw Eunhyuk’s hand harshly and glared at him.
“You don’t want to come with me? Okay, fine! Do what you want to do. Stay here. Or go back to your house where the bullies might waiting for you in front of your door and then continue what they just did earlier.” he spat out sarcastically, not even once minding the other’s scared face and teary eyes. He turned around and started to make his leave, unconsciously smirking when he saw another shadow towing hesitantly behind him.
**
“Be my boyfriend.” Donghae said out of the blue. “No force.” He added.
Both of them had arrived at Donghae’s apartment about an hour ago and currently sitting in the big, spacious living room; enjoying a glass of coffee for Donghae, while Eunhyuk had a glass of hot chocolate.
Eunhyuk stared at him with wide eyes, breath hitched as he tried to find any trace of tease from Donghae’s deep-hazel orbs. However he found none, not even a single hint of twinkle or teasing. The thing was, Donghae’s eyes were empty.
After what seemed like forever, Eunhyuk, with pink tainted cheeks, nodded to Donghae’s direction.
Honestly speaking Donghae was a bit taken aback for he was just spluttering the words out of his mind a few minutes ago. He didn’t expect Eunhyuk would nod at him and agreed to be his boyfriend.
Being a simple and easy-going person he was, he just shrugged at Eunhyuk’s answer and leaned back to the couch, a satisfied look plastered on his face.
**
Whispered words, piercing stares, and many other things he couldn’t avoid that morning just made him felt like a criminal who was sentenced to death. Eunhyuk was walking right beside Donghae with merely a 15 cm gap between them; head bowed in a
shy manner and too scared to pick an eye contact with other people.
Donghae was seen walking together with someone who was not even the one from his famous circle of friends, creating quite a stir between the students; because no, Donghae would never walk together with other people except his closest friends.
When they arrived in front of Donghae’s class, Donghae turned to Eunhyuk and said,”Now you can go to your class.”
Eunhyuk just looked at him, a perplexed expression clearly shown on his face.
Donghae growled and leaned closer. “I do what I want. Being my lover means you have to accept everything about me. Now go.” He pushed Eunhyuk on the shoulder with the tip of his point finger. Eunhyuk seemed to be obedient and docile, which was why Donghae chose him out of many people out there.
Eunhyuk, having no other choice laid before him, slowly turned on his heel and walked toward his class; unconsciously pouting his lips in confusion.
Donghae heaved a sigh and entered his class, ignoring his brain which just thought how cute that pouting lips was.
**
An aghast, tense looking Heechul came up in front of Donghae on lunch time and grabbed Donghae by his wrist just when he was about to scoop down his lunch.
“What??” Donghae asked indignantly to Heechul when they set their selves into one of the nearest vacant class.
“You date the mute guy?” Heechul deadpanned.
“Who?” Donghae lazily replied.
Heechul banged one of the desks and pointed at Donghae accusingly. “Don’t act like you don’t know anything Lee Donghae. We all know there’s only one mute guy in this school and I know you’re dating him!” he half-shouted.
“And why is that a problem for you?” Donghae lowered his head and leaned closer to Heechul, glowering at him in a challenging manner. He didn’t like it when people poking their nose into his business, and that’s including his own best friend.
“You have to break up with him.”
“Who do you think you are to order me around?” Donghae paused for a moment,”we might be close, but this time, just stay away and keep your mouth shut.”
Heechul seemed to be too shocked with Donghae’s harsh words, for he was just standing there completely stunned. Donghae could be rude, but he had never been like this to him before.
“You’ll regret it.” Heechul muttered through gritted teeth, holding his anger from slipping away from his mouth and left Donghae on his own.
**
They had been dating for two weeks but there’s nothing much they had done. Donghae would walk with Eunhyuk together to his class then told Eunhyuk to go to his class on his own. That was all. No lunch together, no skinship, no going home together after school.
His best friends let him do whatever he wanted without complains, though Heechul was still didn’t talk to him and Donghae could care less. Ryeowook interruption on his daydreaming session in one of their Science class made him feel anxious to know more about Eunhyuk; how much do you know about that guy, hyung?
He was indeed knew nothing about his so-called boyfriend, usually he wouldn’t care about it, but this time, he felt like he wanted to know about Eunhyuk’s life.
And so Donghae skipped his last two classes that day and headed to Eunhyuk’s house to find out about his lover. There’s nothing much he could find from the school resume, so he decided to pay a visit to Eunhyuk’s house, which apparently was pretty far from school. Two hours driving that is. And by the time he arrived there, he was a bit surprised to discover a slice of Eunhyuk’s life, something that he didn’t even imagine before.
He was shunned away by his close family when his parents died from a murder because his parents couldn’t pay the debt they had. Luckily, the murderer and the debt collector were caught and prisoned. I think that was why he doesn’t talk anymore. He’s mute not because he got something wrong with his body, it’s his mind. He refuses to talk. Only me as his only mother’s best friend took care for him and I couldn’t bear with him any longer. It’s not that I hate him, but I have my own family, young guy. Including me and Eunhyuk, there are four mouths to feed, and Eunhyuk doesn’t help much. He’s nice though, but what I need right now is money. Eunhyuk can’t work because he’s too afraid of people. I want to get rid of him but I just can’t. I..I don’t know what to do with him anymore; even he refuses to talk to me.
On his way home, he pondered about what he heard from Eunhyuk’s aunt earlier. Her husband passed away four years ago, Eunhyuk was 13 years old back then. Since then she had replaced her husband to earn money for their living. But as the years passed it was getting too much for her so she stopped working and her two sons, who were older than Eunhyuk, had been working as bin men until now. That was the only job they could get. Without thinking any longer, Donghae fished his phone out from his pocket and told the butler of the Lee’s main house that they would have two new people working there.
--
“You don’t look like you’re currently in a relationship.” Yesung said when they were sitting in the leafy shade of a tree at the school park.
Donghae averted his gaze to the green grass in front of him, sighing when he could still feel Yesung’s eyes on him.
“So you mean I have to do what people usually do to their lover? Like, eating lunch together, going on a date to a café, kissing him goodnight and those other mushy acts?” Donghae snickered.
“Why, why ever not?” Yesung queried.
Donghae snorted and looked ahead saying nothing. The fresh morning breeze swayed his mop of brunet hair softly, and Donghae was all but closed his eyes tight, relishing the comfortable surrounding he was in.
**
Donghae opened the door to his new apartment and dragged Eunhyuk inside. This was one of his attempts to act like a boyfriend without much of an effort. He closed the door with his left feet and took off his shoes. He stopped on his track when he saw Eunhyuk just standing there, completely frozen and doing nothing.
“You won’t wander around my apartment with those shoes on, will you?” his words snapped Eunhyuk out of his trance and made his face flushed. “And if you thought this apartment is different with the one you know, yes, I moved to this one because I’m bored with the old one.” He said absentmindedly. Eunhyuk hesitantly took his shoes of and put the house-slipper on, and headed to the couch. He settled himself on it carefully, eyes observing the apartment. This apartment was obviously bigger than the one before, but there were not so many things around, considering how big this apartment was.
There was a big sliding door which led to the balcony. A thin ray of sunlight came in through the drawn curtains. Minutes later, Donghae emerged from his room, clad in a white shirt and grey sweatpants. He stood right in front of his door, staring at Eunhyuk with unreadable eyes.
“Come, I’ll show you my room.” He raised his hand, signaling Eunhyuk to come over which Eunhyuk replied with a startled look. Donghae dropped his shoulders and frowned. “I won’t do anything, come here.”
Eunhyuk rose from his seat and strode with heavy steps to where Donghae was standing.
Donghae opened his room and kept it ajar for Eunhyuk’s sake.
“I’ve never been a tidy person, my things are thrown carelessly and unless I make a real effort things soon get like this.” He waved his arms and sat on his bed.
Eunhyuk’s eyes wondered around, trying to adjust himself in the other man’s room. Silence filled the room in no time. Donghae sweatdropped, he didn’t even really know what’s his own intention for letting this guy enter his room. Even his best friends were never allowed to be there. He finally got Eunhyuk to follow him outside and make a mug of hot chocolate.
“I am not that kind of person who will act sweet and put in effort for other,” He paused, “So you got to make it yourself.” Donghae said, sort of childishly. He gave Eunhyuk a packet of instant chocolate and a mug with monkey picture printed on it. His white, pale right hand reached up, both of them felt tingles the moment their fingers touched each other. But Donghae quickly brushed it off.
Eunhyuk was stirring the sweet mixture slowly, while Donghae had finished making his, sipping from the mug bit by bit. He glanced at the latter’s mug, gaining himself a not so good idea. He averted his eyes to Eunhyuk and attempted to talk to him, so he called out, “Eunhyuk.”
He didn’t really know what had gotten into his mind, but when Eunhyuk turned to his direction, he poured the insides of his mug-steaming warm chocolate, to the thin man’s red head.
Eunhyuk’s eyes widened, but he only flinched a little, not even a whimper of pain escaped his thin lips.
Seeing this, Donghae was quickly taken over by his rage. He grabbed Eunhyuk’s shoulder-and yanked on the latter’s collar hard.
Eunhyuk was shaking in fear, not to mention how awful Eunhyuk’s face was like-he’s a mess, his face gotten red and tears started pooling in his eyes.
“…It hurts, right?” Donghae asked Eunhyuk as he clenched his teeth.”..And you still didn’t talk?”
The latter looked down; his tears fell to the floor, making Donghae groaned in frustration.
Why didn’t he whimper in pain? Why did he keep his mouth shut even when I poured that hot liquid onto him? Was it all he did until now? I don’t know anymore what I have to do to make him stop ignoring pains.
Such a nuisance.
