It was getting dark by now, and Maru still have a few kilometers to go before reaching Shibuya. He had wanted to escape town by going to someplace refreshing and since he is into driving lately, he decided to drive alone. Perhaps, his venture took his awareness of the time and it was late before he realized that he needed to go home. He needed to wake up early the next day for their rehearsal. Maru grumbled. He was always late and his group mates were getting pissed about it because it only did not affect him but also them.
“Maru…Daijoubu?”
Except Ueda. Maru smirked to himself because he wasn’t the only one who would be late tomorrow Ueda had insisted to go with him because he wanted to have a little sightseeing. Their rooms were next to each other so Ueda knew that Maru would be leaving the city before anyone else did. Maru didn’t want to tell anyone that he was going to leave because they would insist on joining and that would be a disaster. He wanted a peace of mind and he wasn’t going to have it if they were there. All of them would talk and babble and rant and he didn’t want to hear any of those things, especially when he’s going to be the driver. But Ueda had promised to be silent and just enjoy the view, so he agreed. It wasn’t like he was being biased or what, he just knew Ueda’s character and he knew that he was going to keep his word. So, he let him and they took off with Maru’s red convertible.
“Maruuu…daijoubu?” Maru felt a tug on his sleeve and saw Ueda who was pouting and rather anxious. “Eh… you seem to be thinking about something while you’re driving, don’t you think it’d be better if we stopped first?”
Ueda really knew him, Maru concluded as he shook his head. “I’ll be fine… besides, we’d better hurry.” He sighed as he looked into the star-filled sky. It was already dark and the lampposts were already on. Two kilometers yet.
“Okay.” Ueda nodded and smiled a little. Then he went back looking at the scenic view though it was already dark.
Maru smiled to himself and stepped on the accelerator pad. “One hundred kilometers per hour…” he hummed quietly. “Should I go?” He asked in a somewhat loud and glanced at the person on his left. Good thing Ueda was still transfixed on his thought and didn’t hear him. Ueda was always like that, always thinking about something so deep that Maru didn’t have the heart to make noise. Sometimes he just stared at Ueda and waited for him to come out of his reverie. He’d have to wait for a long time, though.
He pulled to a stop and let Ueda gaze at the sea below. Ueda took a deep breath, brown eyes still gazing at the scenery. Meanwhile Maru had his eyes spellbound on him, letting it move over to the different parts of the leader’s lean body. He knew it was already a habit of his.
Ueda sighed thoughtfully and murmured, “I can’t see anything anymore.” Then he saw Maru staring oddly at him, mouth slightly open. He stared back and chuckled playfully, slapping Maru on the arm. He just couldn’t contain the laughter seeing Maru’s weird expression like that, weirder than his funny faces during photo shoots.
Maru felt Ueda’s slap and woke up out of his trance.
“You look so funny.” Ueda snickered and covered his mouth with his closed fist.
Maru grinned at him and asked, “Well, shall we go?” he grabbed the clutch and placed his right foot on the pedal.
“Yes.” Ueda nodded and smiled. “Thank you.” He took hold of Maru’s hand and covered it with his. “You have been kind to me, you have always been.”
Maru felt his heart skip a heartbeat.
Maru shrugged and gave a warm smile. “You are my tomodachi. We’re friends for a long time now, so I should be.”
And Ueda still hadn’t let go of his hand. Instead, he held it more tightly. “And I haven’t been doing anything for you.”
“You’re doing something.” Maru heard himself utter before he could stop himself. “Um, what I meant was, you keep supporting me. I could feel that you’re behind me everytime.”
“But it isn’t enough.” Ueda protested as he clutched Maru’s hand more tightly than ever. “I want to repay you.”
Maru scratched his cheek. “I’m not asking for it. Besides, I really wanted to help you in any way I could.”
Ueda seemed to consider this for a moment when he looked up to Maru’s eyes and asked, “Could I hug you then?”
“Uhm.” Maru thought, though it was impossible as his brain started to reach different levels of impairment.
Without warning, Ueda grabbed forward and hugged him.
Maru thought that this could go on forever. Just a thought.
Ueda let go of him and held up his pinkie. “Friends forever?”
Oh darn. This was one of the things Maru wanted to avoid and yet, it was here to torment his lovelife forever.
“I… uh…” Maru stuttered intelligibly.
Ueda looked at him expectantly, his pinkie still waiting.
Because Maru hadn’t been reacting, Ueda crossed and stared thoughtfully at his finger. “Nande? Does it look weird? Is it dirty or what?” he pouted, still looking at his pinkie, "I just wanted to do this because with this, I could promise you that I’ll stay by your side forever. Maybe I can repay you in the process.”
Maru shook his head furiously. “No, it isn’t that…”
Ueda tucked his lower lip and waited.
“Do you really want to repay me?” Maru asked hesitantly, twiddling his thumbs.
Ueda nodded.
“Well then…” Maru gulped nervously and took a deep breath. “If that’s what you say so…”
Grabbing Ueda’s shoulders, he leaned in forward and kissed him.
…Or maybe not a kiss. It was a smack on the lips and for a brief second. A kiss was, after all, somehow passionate and would last longer than a second. Maru concluded that his kiss wasn’t any of the two. He thought that if a kiss was passionate, then the lips involved should at least crush each other out of desire. But his kiss wasn’t. It was a simple peck on the lips and it was full of nervousness. After that Maru let go of Ueda’s shoulders and prayed that he wouldn’t get killed by the person he had just kissed. Somehow he had managed to blush as he gripped the clutch and started to turn on the engine.
“...Stop.” He heard Ueda whisper beside him, still dazed from the kiss. Err, smack on the lips for a brief second. Maru, still blushing, ignored him and turned on the engine. Then he felt his arm getting tugged by Ueda. “…stop…” he mumbled.
Maru exhaled deeply and turned off the car. He closed his eyes and prepared himself for the final blow.
“…Um.” He heard the leader mutter. “Why did you just kiss me?”
“It was a smack on the lips for a brief second.” Maru coughed.
“Why did you kiss me?”
“It was a smack on the lips for a brief second.” Maru corrected him again, eyes still shut tight.
“Whatever.” Ueda huffed. “I just wanted to know why you kissed me.”
“Ueda-kun.” Maru started. “I’m sorry if I stole you a kiss-erm, a smackonthelipsforabriefsecond, but you wanted to repay me so I just did. I’m sorry if I broke your trust as well as your friendship, but since you’re really determined to repay me, I just thought of something. That’s why we’re going home now, and don’t even try to think of jumping out of the car or whatsoever-we can all forget this and-”
“Look.” Ueda said irritated, cupping Maru’s face and moving it so that they were face to face. “Nakamaru, I just wanted to ask you why you kissed me, that’s all.”
Maru gulped.
Silence.
“…I was just going to ask for another one, you know.” Ueda pouted endearingly at Maru, putting a finger to his lips. “And I’d prefer if it would be a proper kiss.”
He knew Maru couldn’t resist.
