I can't believe the amount of 'discussion' (read wank) that has suddenly sprung up over the term 'gencest' since the Gencest Bang was recently announced. I've been in the SPN fandom for eight years and counting, and have known the meaning of the term since the beginning.

The definition of "incest" from etymonline: from Latin incestum "unchastity, ( Read more... )

I didn't know the proper definition, but I knew what the Bang was about (LOL I never thought to look it up : ). But this makes perfect sense.
Thanks for posting this!

What else can you expect from the destiheller purity brigade? But yes, it's appalling. I mean, it's a gen event, and still one of them accused the mod of promoting child abuse and child grooming!

Right? All of this policing about what's appropriate and what isn't. Even if gencest were about incest, which it isn't, it's simple enough to understand that your kink may not be my kink and that is fine. But haters still insist on barging into other people's spaces and airing their unsolicited opinions. Freaking morons.

What a beautiful example of "Bless your little heart, but...."

Nicely put! I can't believe folks don't get what gencest is. Me, I've always read it as 'their devotion is sooooo deep--but not that deep, yo.'

Haha, well said! I think people are mostly annoyed that gencest is canon, which leaves no space for them to write about their 'ships'. But there are already so many challenges focused on romantic/sexual pairings, so maybe just leave this one alone and go on your merry way, dude. :-D

Your problem here is that you think people will use common sense.

The "cest" in "incest" means "chaste" or "pure". Effectively, "cest" = the opposite of "INcest",

According to superwiki, the name (Gencest) is a mashup of Gen and Wincest.

Weecest has no "in" in it's name, and the "cest" doesn't mean chaste.

So, that grammar rule doesn't apply to all things in fandom, it doesn't work that way.
