This entry is for double_dear! Tonight I went to a musical that one of the high schoolers at our church was in. It was based off the (Disney) Broadway musical of Beauty and the Beast, and she played Belle!!! I hadn't seen the movie in years so I wondered how well I would remember it all (I have seen it many many times, even if none of them have been recent), ( Read more... )

Aaah, Beauty and the Beast! Such a good story! Our Gaston likes the play better, but we've only seen one not-so-great stage adaptation (in which he played the Beast), so we're still partial to the movie. Oh man, those kids dealing with wardrobe malfunctions! Good for them, not letting it slow them down!

YAY SILLY GIRLS! Represent!! It's okay not to know they're called Silly Girls--we actually first knew them as Bimbette, because that's how they're listed in the movie credits. We only started calling them Silly Girls regularly after we cosplayed them.

Yay for fangirl screaming!!! Actually, we first started doing that when our sister was in a production of Bye Bye Birdie! That same year, we had annual passes to Disneyland with our family, and we would go see Billy Hill and the Hillbillies, and for part of their show they'd do an Elvis bit, so we took the Bye Bye Birdie fangirl screams to their show and it was great fun. Aaah, memories... (Of course, these days, I feel more like the parents singing "Kids"...)

Yes, I'm still partial to the movie too! (it's hard to compare a high school production to a feature film...) Of the new songs they added (or songs I forgot were in the movie?? I hope not, but.) there was one toward the end I think I liked but the rest I wasn't so attached to. But again, it's comparing something familiar and nostalgic to something new performed by high schoolers (even reasonably talented high schoolers) so it's not really fair. I will say I'd forgotten how cartoonishly-drawn some of the characters were in the movie (like LeFou, and of course the people under enchantment as objects), and I do prefer watching characters that are more humanized. Lumiere was rather dashing ( ... )

It's true; nostalgia does tend to get a higher vote, especially when it's nostalgia for something that's still awesome when you watch it as an adult. I liked "Human Again" the first time I heard it, but it was a demo track with Alan Menken and Howard Ashman as the Beast and Belle, and Alan Menken as the Beast learning to read is the cutest thing ever and I have yet to hear anyone top it, including Robby Benson. But seeing humanized characters is definitely a treat; we made a mental note for the next time we go to Japan to check when they're doing Disney on Broadway shows and see if we can get in.
