Winter break reading list

Jan 02, 2006 20:13

Drat, I really didn't read as much as I thought. New Year's resolution, read more.

1. Pledged: the secret life of sororities by: Alexandra Robbins. ** Okay, okay my total trash book. I'm allowed at least one.
2.Madame Bovary's Ovaries: a darwinian look at literature by: David Barash **** Granted I already knew the darwinian stuff, but it was a fun book. Short, sweet and to the point with humorous commentary.
3.The Picture of Dorian Grey by: Oscar Wilde*** Been meaning to read this one for a long time. Wilde is really humorous.
4.Gilead by: Marilynne Robinson * And believe it or not this one won the pultizer. Bleh. Wasn't moved or inspired. Perhaps it deserved another star, but I really believe it was probably the worst book I read over break.
5. The Known World by: Edward P Jones ** Eh, the topic of black slave owners just really doesn't interest me much. It was pretty well written with some interesting characters. Some bizarro stuff infused. Maybe someone else's cup of tea, just not mine.
6. The Shipping News by: Annie Proulx ** Another in my long line of medicore pultizer's. Small town with wacky characters. Personally if you want small town wackiness go for Empire Falls much better book.
7.The Oxford Murders by: Guillermo Martinez ** I almost gave it three stars because I was entertained and I didn't guess the ending by a mile. However, it still seemed standard, run of the mill book. Maybe it's because I had read so many disappointments that I wasn't in the mood to see this one as fabulous. I guess I just have high standards.
8.Katherine by: Anya Senton *** I would have given it four if it weren't for the strange ending, or well plot line prior to the ending. However, it was wonderfully researched with all kinds of historical politics. What historical fiction should be.
9. Guenevere: Queen of the summer country by: Rosalind Miles ** Run of the mill historical fiction. Not to mention the fact that the mists of avalon is the best book on arthurian legend. This one just doesn't cut it. Not even worth it enough to read the second in the series.
10. Life Mask by: Emma Donoghue *** Really well researched with good characters. I liked it better than the crimson petal and the white. And all the comments about Reynolds, the RA and Sarah Siddons was great. The whole lesbian artist romance sub plot thing got in the way of what I thought was more important: the courtship of Ms Farren by the richest man in England.

I'm working on a few more that I will have finished by the end of the week, but I'm going to count those as my winter quarter reading list.
