about the new health textbooks, i heard on npr today that the definition for "marriage" in these new books specified that it was only between a man and a woman. the old books weren't gender specific. people were complaining.

on the text book issue. the stuff about contraception, stds, and marriage aren't recent things. The state board decided what the stance on all that was awhile back.

It's also not uncommon for there to be "texas editions" of high school text books.

we've done this for a long time. Texas requires every school to buy the state adopted text book. that's shitload of books. so they can pretty much request anything they want. They've done this to the history, science, health, and govt textbooks for a long time. Don't worry they'll adopt another ass backwards book in 10 years.

yup. ten years. that's how long that book will be in everyhealth classroom in texas. I'm glad they mentioned it today. it's been a bone of contention with me and most teachers for quite some time.

As far as you keeping your body your own well. uh. I've been telling you to charge for years so...

rent the new margaret cho dvd. it's your kind of shit.

Well, as of at least 8 years ago, they had condoms in their school books. At least mine did. I've known about state approved textbooks, I'd just never heard about what they'd left out of them.
I'll be damned if they're teaching that to MY kids. When I have them.
In addition to keeping me from ever being apathetic again, this election has made it official that I'm going to be one of THOSE moms who goes to school board meetings. Ever see Field of Dreams? That mom, I'm gonna be like her.

And you hush about my body. I've got new standards now. They gotta have a 401k. Even if they do supersize my Happy Meal.
That's the new joke at my office.

"Well hello. What's your name?"
"Alyssa. Do you have a 401k?"
"A what? No. Hey! Hey, where you goin'?"

Good for you Alyssa!

I totally know what you mean. It's not enough to just do the political thing every four years.

I feel very inspired by what you wrote, so thank you for that, and good luck with your politcial endeavors!
