Not to discourage you from dpn cause they're important and all, but knitting socks and other suck tube like things are way easier and more exciting with magic loop knitting.

Yay, thanks for the tips! I've tried magic loop (about a year ago), but every time I do it it seems like I end up with a really loose side where the loop is pulling on it. :( I may go back to it if I find the octopus-like dpns to be too unwieldy.

I shall bookmark the pattern, and the column. Quite awesome!
