ramblings about ramblin'

This past week i went on two campus interviews for faculty positions, at Franklin & Marshall in Pennsylvania and Mount Holyoke in Mass. Both positions are in the Math departments, but they're both looking for an applied person. Both departments are populated by super-nice people, based on my observations and on talking with people in other ( Read more... )

I think Mount Holyoke sounds great. Of all the things one might do with one's life, teaching in the isolated idyll of a liberal arts college sounds pretty damn good. And on the other hand, I don't think you have to feel like this is a lifetime commitment. This is the 21st century, man! No one stays in one place forever.

I think Northampton would be a super great place to be. Close to Boston, close to our alma mater, and it's a hip little town. Far from Ellis of course, but it doesn't sound like there's an option that gets you around that problem.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that you get an offer!

Thanks for the wise words. You're so right - it's the malaise of the privileged with too many options. I mean, this work kicks the shit out of most ways of paying the bills.

As for Ellis, i gotta really think about my priorities - i mean i probably could find some job in Madison. One thing that's cool is that because of one more year at Chicago, and then potentially two sabbatical years out of the next eight, i could actually spend a decent fraction of time with him (with summers and winter breaks) over the next nine years, and then he'll be pretty much grown.

Yeah, Noho sounds like where i'd want to live. Because i'm so used to not driving to work, i checked it out, and there's an express bus from Smith to Mt Holyoke that takes only 25 min.

But first i'll have see if they want me...
