buddy breathing; onew/taemin

There was no way that what happened in New Zealand was buddy breathing. It served the purpose of buddy breathing, but putting his hands on Jinki's face and pressing their cold lips together under the water was nothing but Taemin, desperate for one opportunity to show Jinki how he felt. When it became clear that they would survive, and Jinki asked him what he was doing with his lips, he pathetically fumbled for an answer he thought Jinki would believe, and not question, despite its stupidity. Taemin was a coward, but he didn't want to risk this partnership that was turning out to be the best relationship he'd ever had. Even though he heard in Jinki’s question something that made him hope.

“Nothing, hyung, I just didn’t want you to drown. We can’t have the leader dying, can we?” and laughed again to ensure good measures.

He fell in love with Lee Jinki, at least a little bit, during that first hug. Certainly, he was a bit put off at the time, but he knew that, looking back, the hug was exactly what he needed in that moment, someone else's arms wrapped tightly around him and their breath in his ear, giving comfort for no reason at all. Or maybe that was the moment he realized that he could live without Choi Minho, but regardless, he fell a little further for Lee Jinki every day, and chided himself for his hopelessness, and propensity for having feelings for the precisely wrong people.

dating; onew/jonghyun

Jonghyun knew what dating was, he'd been on plenty of dates. What Jonghyun couldn't work out was what dating meant to Jinki. To Jonghyun's mind the two of them had been on plenty of dates. He'd taken Jinki out to eat more times than he could count. Sure, people took their best friends out to dinner but to that many restaurants? Despite this fact Jinki had never seemed to actually notice that they were, in fact, dates. Nor had he noticed the other dates; singing karaoke, going to see a basketball game, going shopping, going to the movies. Jonghyun was wondering what might show his intentions more clearly. So he had decided to take Jinki out to a fancy restaurant.

He'd told Jinki once what women expected from a date, so Jonghyun decided he was going to give the exact same treatment to Jinki. Jonghyun was dressed up, he had plenty of money and he had a table reserved at the fanciest restaurant he could conceivably book on twenty four notice. He was wearing his best cologne, and he had spent so much time in the bathroom he'd been close to beating Kibum's record. Oh yes, he was ready.

“Where are we going, Jonghyun?” Jinki asked, following him out of the apartment.

“Le Moulin de Lagalette.” Jonghyun replied. He'd deliberately tried to get a table there knowing Jinki would recognize the name.

“We're going all out, huh, Jonghyun?” Jinki asked. Jonghyun was sure he caught the hint of a smile on Jinki's face but it was gone before he really had a chance to see.

“Yeah,” he said. “I thought we could try it out.”

“Sounds promising, Jonghyun,” Jinki replied.

Jonghyun did all the date things he could think of. When they got to the car Jonghyun opened the door for Jinki.

“Thank you, Jonghyun,” Jinki said.

Jonghyun could have sworn he felt the leader brush against him but it was probably his over-active imagination. He thought it was still his imagination when Jinki did the same thing in the restaurant as Jonghyun pulled out a chair for him. There was the hint of a smile again but it was gone.

cold; onew/minho

Sometimes, Minho got cold. Bone-deep, aching cold, that he couldn't chase off with a well built fire and a scalding cup of tea. There would be nights where he wrapped himself in extra shirts and blankets and sat close to the stove, and still shivered with his arms wrapped around his chest. He was extremely lonely, down past his bones, past his guts, into his soul. He craved the warmth of touch. Craving someone to come home to at the end of the day, who was human, and sometimes the sheer enormity of how alone he was made him stagger under its weight.

“Hey, Minho.” Jinki was warm to look at, warm to be around, warm to talk to. “You cold again?”

Minho managed a weak nod, eyes locked on the brimming stove, glowing red.

Jinki smiled, “Let’s go out and get some kimchi soup, it’s nice and warm.” He smiled at his idea, “Just don’t tell Kibum we went out to eat, ‘kay? He’d kill both of us.”

Minho nodded again, a small smile dancing on his face. “Yeah. Nice and warm.”

And when he went out with Jinki, he wore more than was necessary for the weather, because sometimes it felt sinfully good to be so warm.

insufferable; onew/key

Kim Kibum was insufferable, for a period of time. He knew that many people felt he was insufferable all of the time, well into college, but Kibum could look back on grade nine and ten as a time where he could not honestly believe that anyone put up with him at all. He raised his hand every single time a teacher asked a question, and was convinced that there was nothing on Earth that he didn't know better than anyone. It took realizing that none of his peers were speaking to him anymore for him to start to alter his behavior, even though he never stopped being somewhat outside of the group for far longer.

As it was, this insufferable boy fell in love for the first time at age fifteen. It was really quite desperate and pathetic, in hindsight, but he was smitten. Lee Jinki was everything Kibum wasn't at that age. People liked Jinki, and Kibum was just another one among them, even though Jinki asked Kibum to go to karaoke with him after school most days that year. Kibum felt the stares as he and Jinki walked out of school together. They told him without opening their mouths that he shouldn’t be there.

But Jinki just grabbed Kibum’s hand and told him the only words he wanted to hear then, “They’re just jealous they can’t be as true with themselves as you are.”

And, the night before Kibum left town, he was at Jinki's house, and when he went to shake Jinki's hand, to say goodbye, Jinki pulled him in for a hug and kissed him, his hands warm and soft on Kibum's cheeks.

He carried that moment with him for a very long time.
