A Good Laugh or Pregnant metal death

May 02, 2006 09:18

In this morning's New York Times, when discussing the topic of why giving teenagers access to emergency contraceptives does not necessarily cause them to have more unprotected sex, columnist Nicholas Kristof made an analogy that caused me to let out a hoot on the train and I figure I ought to share it with you...

We encourage young people to ( Read more... )

Definitely one of the more gruesome analogies I've encountered in the editorials section!

I think the biggest problem with the abstinance only programs is that they completely abstain from education about STD's and safe sex.

then the analogy could be more like this:

The administration's philosophy seems to be that
the best way to discourage risky behavior is to take away the safety
net and not nessesarily inform young people about the reprocusions . Hmmm. I suppose that if we replaced air bags with sharpened spikes on dashboards, and don't tell anyone, people would be at least seriously mangled if they disobeyed our suggestion to drive carefully. Others may or may not find out about the nasty reprocusions of driving recklessly because those who experienced them would be too embarassed to go public about it, and the media would try its best to keep it all a secret because the topic is taboo.

Of course I remember you! How are you doing? And where? I always wondered what happened to you. Thanks for commenting! I'm friending you immediately.

yay! i wondered what happened to you too. i never thought the "boston community" would actually lead me to an old friend. :)

right now i'm in the middle of trying to finish up my semester, so it's a little crazy, but i'm good. i go back and forth between Newton and Amherst as I'm in grad school at UMass Amherst for labor studies (social justice and the like), but my folks are still here in Newton & i like to come home on weekends. i think i'll be here for the summer interning.

i took a glimpse at your photo website -- i dont remember you being quite the photographer! really nice pictures.

friended you back, of course.

Ah livejournal. :-)

Wow, labor studies! That's a topic I find myself thinking about a lot these days. For a while I had been thinking about becoming a social worker, and I took some classes in the topic. I might still pursue that career path but I'm trying to decide between that and photography.

Good to hear from you again! Thanks for the compliments on the pictures. :-)

Okay, I absolutely love this analogy, especially since I'm sort of a "councellor/confidante" to a 15 year old girl whose 14 year old friend may be pregnant (what is the world coming to)

May I repost that in my journal?

Of course! It's not like I control the copyright on it anyway...
