I've sacrificed the past 6 garbage days in favor of trains and planes. The rotting broccoli is putrid, but I had a lovely time and met some wonderful friends, old and new. My 38 hours in Tokyo over the weekend means I'm searching the classifieds on Monday to see if I can move there. Anna and I figured that if we lived in Tokyo we'd have more ( Read more... )

i just had a conversation with my dad about how absolutely fetid broccoli burps are. it seems so cute and inocent before it starts to decompose.

that rotten garbage thing is an old problem of yours. maybe you should start buying waste baskets with lids.

also, i remember a day when, despite never having been there, you had some kind of aversion towards tokyo. kind of like my old aversion towards ann arbor that you thought was so dumb, although i was born there and had been there many times since. so, the way i see it is, i shouldn't be hearing any more critisisms from you regarding my prejudices.

My Tokyo prejudice had some foundation. I was there for three days last year under the influence of jet lag. Mostly it was crappy because I was in my Shinjuku hotel neighborhood and it was really hot and mostly I was walking around at 5am. Before that my Tokyo prejudice was based on my host family's strong preference for Kansai, and they had me convinved that Tokyo was sterile and serious.

But last weekend Tokyo was 5 degrees C cooler than Wakayama, had lots of trees and quiet little streets, interesting people... it was great. I always thought that your aversion to Ann Arbor was in the same category as you thinking cities were better when they had more crime and graffiti and stuffff.

p.s.
I want to go to this so much... bug and plant sounds, haino and yoshitomo nara and possible john cage endings and a nice summer evening in a garden

you're thinking about my feelings on time square and new york subways, respectively. i was just dissapointed that things weren't exactly like they were in big and those 80's eddie murphy movies.

my disdain towards ann arbor has more to do with the invasion of shitty boutique chain stores downtown and the lack of seedy massage parlors.

your romanticized view of tokyo is largely the same as my romanticized view of detroit, but on a larger, more Blade Runner-esque scale.

i will be be living mere yards from an ethopian restaurant though, let's see tokyo top that!

ETHIOPIAN FOOD!
That's something I can only dream of over here...

Man... I'm stumped on what to counter that with.

i always thought that ethiopian food was somehow ironic. maybe because they have the smallest gnp and lowest standard of living in the world and you always see those commercials featuring starving ethiopians that need 70 cents a day.

i've heard that the blue nile in ann arbor has ethiopian food but it's expensive, which is also ironic.

you could probably say the same thing about thai food since those folks don't have it much better. thailanders got the shaft though since sally struthers didn't throw her weight around for them.

maybe ethiopian food really is expensive. and ethiopians are so poor because they keep trying to make it on their non-existant budgets. and maybe that 70 cents was really just going to get those starving kids a half-eaten cheeseburger from wendy's dollar menu...

this summer went by way to quickly. it never even got very hot up here, and it was raining most of the time anyway. youre reasons for living in tokyo are my reasons to move to new york. more friends better clothing more stuff to do on date night USA (that would be saturday nights).

city life. XOX

I decided the best thing to do is stick out Fishing Life for the rest of the year and save money so I can move somewhere nice next year. Like New York. Or Oslo! I recently discovered what must be the best kept secret about Oslo.
One of the best things I found in Tokyo was a hat shop filled with the most flattering hats ever. I've been waiting all my life for that.
