Quit your day job

I've been planning for this day, officially, for the last 6 months. Unofficially it's a move I've always wanted to make, but the stars have only recently aligned themselves so that the decision could be slightly less stupid than normal ( Read more... )

My first (middle-aged) reaction was, "you crazy!" But you are right, despite the economy (and you probably know it is a really, really bad to be a freelancer) this is a good point in your life to give this a legitimate shot, since you have so few responsibilities to anyone (or anything) but yourself. So good luck! And when you make it big remember all us little people. In other words, remember to steer some $$ our way.

[But FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT DRINK PABST'S. I do not understand your generation's love of this abysmal swill.]

Hah, first I must defend my choice in beers. I almost never actually drink Pabst, as I agree that it is an "abysmal swill." Plus, it'd be ridiculously ungrateful of me since Madison is overflowing with an abundance of really quality, locally made brews.

The 40 oz. you see in the photo has been sitting in our refrigerator ever since my fella's boss gave it to him as a gag gift at Christmas. It seemed somehow appropriate for this post.

Secondly, thank you for the well-wishes! I'm fully aware of how difficult it is to make a living at being a writer, so I'm also hedging my bets by getting a part time gig (barista? bath attendant? who knows) and spreading my music and writing work out to as many venues as possible. But of course, we'll see. It'll be an adventure, regardless!

OK, knowing you don't drink the stuff (and how could I ever doubt you?), I feel better now. Here's hoping you don't reach the desperation point where you're cooking ramen noodles in Pabst's.

It's good to have a practical backup gig--baristas, bartenders, etc. are jobs where people are always needed. Anyway, enjoy your adventure!
