Bookplates and author signings

Okay, I have a question. I've signed two or three books locally now (because no matter how well you know someone, you always want them to sign a book if they manage to come out with one), and each time it's taken me like a solid half hour to think of anything to say. I was shit at signing yearbooks, y'all. I know that Neil Gaiman signs in fun ( Read more... )

You know, for fun things to sign with, have you ever considered some of your livejournal taglines?

You know like that trademark "I will turn this internet around and everyone will go to bed without porn."

Ah! Replace "internet" with "signing" and that could actually be pretty useful. ; )

Go with the theme of the book. Something like:

CLEOLINDA: *writes something clever in book*

----

BOOK: *is signed*

When I handed the book to Billy Collins, it fell open to a random page, and he asked if I'd wanted that poem in particular signed, and I said no, I'd be happy wherever he signed it. He said it clearly must be fate that it opened to that particular page, and signed the word "Serendipity" across it. Nothing too important or well-thought-out, but I like it. The poem is one of my favorites now, too :)

I was really young (gr 6) and met Richard Scrimger. He wrote in my book a compliment to my parents and scribbled an imitation of the music logo on my shirt. As well, when Farley Mowat was signing my book, he wrote (I believe it was) "Want a body-graph?" or something along those lines. There was another author who wrote in his book Top 100 Metal Songs of All Time "Raise the fist of the metal child!"
And that's about it.

And Jill Thompson doodled her name and drew Death. It rocked.

Farley Mowat has been one of my favorite authors since childhood. Congratulations on getting to meet him!

Laurie Halse Anderson book signature frenchmoodle October 22 2005, 23:30:14 UTC
Laurie Halse Anderson signed my books so:

For the book "Speak" she wrote my name and "Speak up!" and then her name. I assume she wrote this on every book at the signing.

For the book "Prom" she wrote "Dare to dance!"

and for the book "Catalyst" she wrote "Be a catalyst!"

Pretty exciting.... so all her stuff had to do with the particular book, maybe you could think of a theme or something, not neccessarily ONE catch phrase but a theme involving your book?

At first I was kind of miffed at the "speak up!" comment because when I met her I froze and kind of just stood there awkwardly while my mom made small talk for me... and Laurie was like "at least ACT like you're having a good time!" and I was so embarrassed....

but then I realized "speak up" probably had to do with the book "speak"... heh... heh...?

I'm still embarrassed.
