Golden Compass update

Dec 28, 2007 15:40

I've updated the Golden Compass in Fifteen Minutes entry to post the parody in full, the way I usually do. MegaUpload's reneged on their reward system offer, so there's no point in asking people to jump through hoops to try to read it now. MegaUpload's refusal to pay out (Erin--very wisely--decided to cash out at 100,000 points to see if they would ( Read more... )

That's such BS, I can't believe they didn't pay up. It's great that you tried to help, though.

Not surprised. It seems the promised payout by MegaUpload was only a carrot dangled to encourage use on their site, which would drive up ad revenue and therefore give them money. They didn't think anyone would actually meet any of those goals, and since a good portion of the site's traffic is likely used for less than legal file transfers, they're just prepared to call fraud no matter what.

I appreciate what you did to try to help. Though I think we can see from the fact that MegaUpload's servers were swamped by people trying to access the Golden Compass files that they were ill-prepared for anything close to the numbers they were demanding.

Yes, I guess that is exactly what happened - they'll have thought that there is no way anyone could have hit those downloads with legitimate uploads, so they won't expect her to fight back. I hope she does, and I hope they'll have to pay her out at the very least.

It does sound like she's fighting--taking them to small claims, at least, since they've accused her of fraud.

The sad part is that we actually were very careful not to upload anything we didn't own the copyright to (parody is protected, blah blah blah) and not to let people use daily download scripts. The ironic part is that I've always hated MegaUpload from a usability standpoint and far prefer sendspace.com, or even yousendit.com.

I'm glad she's going to small claims court.

And I'll never be using Megaupload again. :)

At any rate, I'm happy I can read it now! I tried to get to it the possibly-good-for-Erin way before, but MU just kills my browser badly.

Yeah--like I was saying elsewhere, I actually hate MU from a usability standpoint. If I'd been able to pick, I would have wanted SendSpace, but they weren't offering $10,000. Of course, now it turns out that MU wasn't really either, and I've driven all this traffic to a site I hate using.

You may have suspected, but no one knew for sure that MU would sleaze out of it. I can dream that as a result of legal action by Erin, they get royally smacked for this, and any benefit of that additional traffic in an ad revenue sense is instead paid out to Erin.

I know. Sites that offer 10,000 $ for real are kind of a market gap, it seems. :|
And try to find comfort in all the traffic you're driving away from them now, and with a more lasting effect at that.
