My grandfather was a brilliant physician until he passed away (and passed some of his skill to me). On his death bed he told me:

Doctors are not gods, nor are they perfect. Besides, how can you completely trust someone who calls their profession "practice"...

At least your friend has a possible happy outcome in all of this...
