It strikes me as desperation on the manufacturer's part, really. They continue to struggle and scrape for an ever smaller piece of the market. Makes one wonder if the giant thundering dinosaurs thought of the pesky little scurrying mammals as "junk", doesnt it?
The commercial that annoys me is the one for some pickup truck (I think), using "Dust in the Wind" and showing all the competing vehicles rusting away.
