My first post in the new grand year 2007, which, given that it's already the second half of January, is really quite alarming. And my lj activity will probably stay on the low for quite some time yet. The Exams Time has finally rolled in (go away, you foul thing!) and pushing two majors at the same time really makes this fun part of the year extra- ( Read more... )

I really liked Marie-Antoinette and The Prestige, besides both of them are in my top movie of 2006. I really want to see The Fountain.
Good luck for your exams ;)

Both of them are in my top movie of 2006.
As they should be, I think.

Since you are a Lynch fan, it's pretty safe to assume that you don't need to have everything spelled out in a story and allow quite a sizable uncertainty margin. I'm quite sure then that you're going to enjoy 'The Fountain' quite a lot. Have fun with it.

Thanks ;)

I didn't actually like Mystic River all that much. It failed to really gut me or anything. *shrugs* A Fish Called Wanda is so much love. Marie Antoinette I thoroughly enjoyed before the movie dragged on and on and I was bored. And I am very annoyed at everybody that told me that the Prestige was as good as Memento because it is absolutely not a movie I should've been disappointed in.

About 'Mystic River', it's probably that the characters didn't manage to get under your skin as they did with me. The fact that I'm a huge fan of Tim Robbins, who got the brunt of all the movie drama, was most likely a factor, too.

THe ending is actually the only part of the 'Marie Antoinette' that I have some serious reservations against. Diametrically different than yours, but still. I was thrown by how abrupt it was. The movie went on and on and on and *bam* the end. I was completely unprepared for it. Not enough closure, my opinion.

I think 'The Prestige' was quite excellent, but 'Memento' was flat-out fantastic on all fronts. Which means, well, a higher level of excellent.

Well, I love Sean Penn, and just... nope. For once I really wanted to give Clint Eastwood a chance, too. Meh.

I was dying for the end by the time it came about, so, yeah. No closure whatsoever, yes, but that I actually don't mind, not just because I wanted it to end, actually, but because given the movie, it seemed very fitting. And because everyone knows what's coming, anyway, don't they.

Exactly. I really wish I hadn't expected Memento. Which I haven't watched in a couple of years I need to do that some time soon, damnit.

Perhaps next time then. Eastwood got two movies out this year. Wait, it's already last year. Anyway, I've seen neither so far, but 'Letters for Iwo Jima' looks quite intriguing ('Flags of our Fathers' I'm probalby going to pass, because, no matter how hard I try - I really can't take Ryan Phillippe seriously in that soldier outfit)

'Expected'? As in 'knew what happens beforehand'? Oooh, that was unfortunate. I didn't expect a thing and the movie blew my mind.

I loved 'The Prestige', wrote my own review when I saw it that pretty much says that. I can't wait till I can get the DVD.

Am looking forward to 'The Fountain', though I'm pretty sure it's going to be a heavy film. I have to admit that it's Hugh Jackman's precence that's going to get me to see this one in the cinema.

I think I'm the only person in the world who's not crazy about 'A Fish Called Wanda'. I just never thought it was that great.

I want to see 'Marie-Antoinette', am very curious about it.

And what a presence it is. I can honestly tell you that I think it was Hugh's best performance ever.
WEll, 'The Fountain' didn't really feel all that heavy. It's not some popcorn flick, sure, but it was much easier to watch than I expected. So you might be pleasantly surprised here.

But that makes you elite, doesn't it?
;)

'Marie Antoinette' was one of the prettiest movies I've seen in recent years. About the story, the opinions vary (you already know mine) but I think it's worth to see it even just for the production values.

Oh, that makes me look forward to it even more. :)
Hehe, I'm gonna be honest here and say that it doesn't always take much for me to think a movie is a bit heavy. It's not necissarily a bad thing, some of the really great movies are a bit on the heavy side for me.
I just hope 'The Fountain' is released over here soon. :)

Hehe, I guess that's one way to look at it.

Again I have to admit. I don't know the details of the true story behind it. I know a little. So I don't think the historical-faults would bother me.
And pretty movies to tend to have an appeal as well.
I'm not a big Kirsten fan, but the movie looks like something I'd like.

About MA, I didn't know all the historical details either. I have to have a really good incentive to dig deeper into history. Which is why I think historical movies are so beneficial. Sure, one can say that they are bending historical facts to fit the plot (well, they usually do) but on the other hand, every time I see a movie based on real life, I seek out the information on my own afterwards, because I'm intrigued.

An intresting piece of trivia: I did my research about Marie Antoinette and I learned that the Queen of France before her was Maria Leszczyńska, a Polish princess. I vaguely remember hearing something about her at some stage of my earlier education but I couldn't really place her. Now, relating something like that to a Sofia Coppola movie feels really great. A bit surreal, but great.
