House of Night: Because vampyre makes it trendy

Aug 23, 2010 12:12

I would like to thank the House of Night Series for showing me that, making nonsensical pop culture references and mocking my target audience will create an instant bestseller. Claiming that goths don't bathe and emos are freaks is the absolute best thing to do in a series that sports covers gothier than Marylin Manson (post-Spooky Kids). Calling ( Read more... )

One was black, with impossibly long hair
(must be a really good weave)

I'm laughing, but inside I'm crying.

I think this sentence alone is justification enough not to get this book. The rest is icing on the cake.

Great review as always!

This book literally killed my brain. I am NEVER ever ever planning on finishing that piece of shit or continue reading any other books in the series.

Might I recommend decent YA fiction instead?
'Beautiful malice' by Rebbecca James.
Cheesy ass title, but don't let it put you off. It's quite popular over here in Australia and it's actually a pretty good book. But they refused to make it young adult so it's an adult book instead. Which is stupid, because this book should definitely be YA. I highly recommend it. Leave House of night alone, it will only rape your brain.

Gaaaah... and those covers make it so damn appealing!

And I think the only reason Cast and that other chick feel safe in mocking the goths is because they wouldn't touch something like this. They'd read the first pop culture reference and ditch it.

Seriously, to draw inspiration from a Meyer quote "it's urban fantasy fiction for those who don't like urban fantasy!"

Give me something by Kelley Armstrong anyday. She writes good YA and Adult fiction. Way better than this overnight writer hacks.

Also... Im curious if you read this horrid series by the name of Wicked. Written by Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguié? They seriously set the bar on terrible. I read the first four books (mainly because they were published into two books vs four). I hate my inane tendency to finish every book I start. Also it was like a bad car wreck... I could stop tear my eyes away because it was bad!

Anyways.. curious on your views, or if you have written a review or vlogged it. I'm curious to see you rant about it - they are so intelligent and

I didn't think too badly of this book. Granted, I was 15 when I read it and didn't think too badly of most books. After reading your review I wonder why I didn't start seeing the fail until Book 3.

Oh yes, I was in the same situation as you. (sorry for highjacking) I think I was around 12 when I picked it up. So young, so naive back then, I know. Eventually Zoey seriously began to bother me (by book 6 she had FOUR, yes count 'em, FOUR boys. Though one of them was killed off). I must have some high tolerance. Don't feel bad, I got to book 6 before I realized about the fail.

Let me guess, the 4th guy was Kalona?

Actually, I didn't count Kalona that time. I guess she has five counting him.

If you read on the House of Night's wikipedia page, it says that Zoey also has an affinity for all 5 elements. Great, now she's the frickin' Avatar.

Great review, as always!
