Whee!
A Little History of the World by E. H. Gombrich.
Recommended. A charming book for adults and a perfect bedside reading for young children! (I'm serious.) Famous for his influential work "The Story of Art", Mr. Gombrich wrote this book as a history book for young kids. Not only did it help sort out the chronology of my historical facts, it's also fascinating to read history written by someone from another part of the world. (Mr. Gombrich was born and grew up in Austria and moved to England around time of WW1-WW2). For example, the book covered pretty much the same world history (aka history of the western worlds, haha) as the one I learned back in schools (in the States) all the way up to end of Roman Empire and beginning of the Middle Ages. From there on, the book pretty much stayed in Europe while the version I learned shifted more toward what's happening in England and later the New World / United States. Also, as Mr. Gombrich finished the book between WW1 and WW2, the ending was particularly fascinating example of how our perceptions differ based on what we know, who we are, where we stand (as we know, Austria, Germany and Russia lost WW1). Mr. Gombrich also addressed this point in a chapter added later to the book. Read in April.
