15 (20) Minute Challenge: Divination

May 14, 2009 09:26

Totally wrote a story with the same premise before. Shhhhhhhh...

"You're in a bad way." He says gravely. "I mean seriously, this spread..."

Libby, eyes bright with concern, worms her way between his view and the cards themselves. Her cheeks puff and deflate with a long breath of air.

"You're really bad at Divination." She says plainly, and scoops the cards into her hands.

Zachary laughs idly and leans back on his hands. They have an exam tomorrow, one they would undoubtedly fail but had nonetheless elected to study for. Sariya, although she'd been too busy to help them, had been kind enough to forecast the outcome. You, she pointed to Libby, your head is too cloudy to see meanings. And Zachary just doesn't believe in it.

Which was true, but they'd decided to study anyway.

Now Libby was reshuffling the playing cards, her face adorably pinched in thought. He takes a moment to enjoy his romantic notions of femininity, embraced fully by her character, then says,

"I know I'm terrible. But what did I do wrong?"

"You totally misread the hand first of all. You didn't even pick a signifier."

"Signifier?"

She looks at him blankly, then rolls her eyes. "The card that represents the asker."

"Oh..." He shuffles through the cards and pulls out a joker.

"How about this one?"

"It's supposed to signify me, not you." She quips sarcastically.

He grins, replaces it, looks through the cards, draws one, lays it face down. Then he sets them in front of her again. "Okay, pick your poison." He says.

She frowns. "This isn't poker, you know..." But focusing as best she can, picks two cards and lays them in the proper order.

He turns them over all at once.

"Your signifier is the Queen of Hearts." He meets her eyes, smiling mischievously. "Appropriate enough for you?"

She turns a little red.

"This," He points to the seven of Diamonds, "is the person you love. Who's that?"

Had she been listening, she would have heard the concern underneath his playful voice.

She shrugs defensively. "I don't know, you're reading the cards..."

There is a sudden, tense silence. He hesitates, then starts again, quieter, "And this..." the three of Clubs, "is what's standing in your way."

They notice it at the same time, a fourth card, hiding behind the three of clubs. She looks at it pointedly. "What's the last one?"

"The true face of the opposition, maybe?" He says jestingly.

She reveals the hiding card. It's the Joker.

but if you've known love like the jokers before
