It is unfortunate that when one finds themselves put on the spot they are unable to be quite as quick-minded as we invariably are when we replay events in our minds later.

Of course, there is rarely ever another circumstance quite like the missed opportunity for that witty retort or clever handling to be of any use again, and in your case I'd actually hope that you never find the need to use that line.

Well, though I hope nobody will ever accost me or my friends in a hostile manner again, I am afraid that my hope is likely in vain (realist). On the other hand, if in the future I'll want to defuse a similar situation, I think that asking a favour might actually turn the situation to everyone's advantage: nobody will have hard feelings and the helper will feel like they did a good deed (optimist).
