Some of you may recall my endless stream of computer trouble ever since I got bad computer-karma for splitting up with a 'speaker to machines' (and taking the computer he built me, because my laptop had broken down ( Read more... )

Tip: Sometimes self-replicating spyware files in your system32 directory can't be removed normally because they disguise themselves as system files, which are protected by default. Programs like Adaware may ask if they can run a scan directly after a reboot, which sometimes overcomes that problem and other times it doesn't.

There is a quick-and-easy way that to nail this problem every single time. Windows safe-mode. It's like a minimal windows run-time environment in which a lot of stuff is simply turned off and can't interfere with fixing problems. I assume you know how to start up Windows in safe-mode? It doesn't matter which version of windows you are running, programs like Adaware will be able to directly remove the harmful files inside the system32 directory (and a few others directories that are normally protected).

I can boot in Safe Mode, I can sign into my account, but after that all I see is a black screen with the words "safe mode" in the corners, but no icons or anything, and the microsoft-button on the keyboard does not do anything. The mouse works. Any idea what I can do?

You can't get to Start and select the program for there? It's probably black because you simply don't see a background. I'm not sure if the icons should be gone also. But it shouldn't matter much.

If that doesn't work, try pressing ctrl-alt-delete and enter the Task manager. Select 'new task' in the first tab and type 'explorer.exe'. That should wake up safemode properly if you can't reach start. Alternatively you could use the taskmanager in a similar way to find and run the executable of your anti-spyware program.

Not as stupid as I look: if I say 'nothing' I also mean no start button.

But thanks, the Task Manager solution worked, I found it on a different site too. But, I ran AVG AntiVirus in safe mode and it seems that it hasn't helped. I have posted a Hijack This log somewhere, hope that will help.

I also suggest running Ewido ( http://www.ewido.net/en/ ) in safe mode. It will remove most stuff that the other spyware removers usually fail to do.

I was planning to try to use a specific malware removal tool and after that AVG anti-spyware in safe mode, but weirdly, it does boot up in safe mode, login screen, but after that all I see is a black screen with the words "safe mode" in the corners but no functionality: the mouse works, but there's no icons or anything on the screen and pressing the windows-button does not do anything. Any idea?

Eep, that's not so good. Alternatively, you can try safe mode with command prompt, but I'm not sure that would help.

If safe mode is inaccessible, it will be hard to fix this without having to reinstall the machine. :|

I got the task manager to work, so I could run firefox to go through my files.
