Merry Christmas to those who celebrate. I sat in the sun on my daughters' deck to have Xmas lunch and now I'm home listening to down-pouring rain and thunder. The weather has truly been a game of two halves today

Eh, depends on how you define excessive. The snow and ice were negligible for this area of the country, although the western part of our state got 20 inches of snow. But we had windchills of -45F, which was certainly excessive.
