Several months ago I accidentally left a post public which should have been private. In it I vented over a situation that worried me and one of the people involved saw it.

I'm very sorry that it was left public and caused anyone to be hurt or upset. I'm not sorry, however, that I had an opinion on a situation and tried to vent about it privately.

Out of curiosity, did this person get hurt now, months later? Or are you apologizing about something that happened months ago?
