I thought the "Romance" was a reference to the medieval (or was it after?) verse stories (argh, there is a German word for them, but I don't know the English one).
I may just be a boring person... It was neat though, seeing all the places paper money was tried first when and why it succeeded, how the currency in devalued in different ways...
If you see Debt: The First 5,000 Years though, pick that up instead. Differently subject of course, but I had numerous laugh-out-loud moments there, and it's a bit more relevant to current events.
Weatherford's book Indian Givers, on the other hand, I whole-heartedly recommend.
