This has been taken out of Mab's cannon. So, now it's just random Mab fluff.
It had been a while since she had bothered to scry. It wasn’t really necessary for most things, it took time and peaceful concentration to do it right. A meditation she didn’t normally have time for. But this was vacation, she had time and wanted this done right. Picking a creature to bind part of your power to wasn’t something done ever day or to be done lightly. Time passed as she searched through space and universes for the right animal.
It had to be a grizzly bear, she was certain of that much. The right type of bear for her temperament and needs. It had to be young enough to learn well and quickly what she needed to teach it. Young enough not to break under what changes it would undergo. She refused to take a cub from it’s mother. So it had to be an orphan cub. A healthy one, no point risking it all on an animal that would die too soon. It was not an easy order to fill even with the access she had.
There was something soothing in the searching. Taking in and dismissing imagines with little thought to what they truly meant beyond the basics. Easy to lose yourself to the rhythm of the search until she found just the right cub. A little male, young and sweet who’s mother had been shot that morning. No worries about his health and he’d be looking for someone to take care of him. Reaching into the still waters she felt her hands close around a warm little fuzzy body. She pulled the small, gently snarling bundle into her lap, breaking the surface of the still water.
She petted and soothed the little beast, kissing it’s forehead and using her will to teach his instincts so she was both sister and mother and cub, to be loved and protected and to protect and love him in turn. The growling turned into a mewling murmur, begging her for attention and food. Standing and cuddling him close, she walked to find the latter, murmuring in his ear. “You’ll do, my little one, you’ll do very well.”
