I haven't actually played 4.0, but having read the book, a lot of the changes are ones I don't love (along with a few that are good). I'm willing to try it, but I don't see any reason to move onto a new edition just because.
Personally, I pre-ordered Pathfinder after playing a Forgotten Realms game with their beta test pdf (which you can download for free at the site). I like it; it's like D&D 3.75 :)
Whichever way you fall, though, there's no shortage of players.
I do not like 4.0. It's a wargame, not a roleplaying game. The rules concentrate almost solely on combat, and they are designed for Star Fleet Battles-level rules lawyering (specializing with miniatures and ubercomplex rules for movement, range and facing).
The focus in 4.0 is entirely on mechanics. The mechanics in 3.5 are correlary to character interaction and roleplay. 4.0 has a better sense of balance in terms of character roles (much as an MMO does), but no 'beating heart' in terms of RP interaction, plot based devices, and non-combat gameplay.
I'd say stick with 3.5 unless you want to run something like miniatures wargaming Warhammer: the D&D game. I know I'm not changing over to 4.0, personally.
Personally, 4.O is like the directions on Poptarts. It's made as idiotproof as possible and in that it has both lost its appeal and lost its integrity as a Table Top RPG. And I don't hate it as a standalone game, but the fact is it only bears the name DnD as a gimmick so the masses consume it and they can make money. Don't get me wrong, I bought $600 in books for 3rd and almost $100 (The DMG and PH) in 3.5. BUT, simply put, that was because they were an improvement over their those that came before them not as it was said already Warhammer DnD. I've become so disenfranchised that I'm actually beta testing a whole new d20 Based RPG I've built. My friends call it "3.Tim". But, that's a whole nother topic so visit me so I don't waste your post space (mugami.wordpress.com). I hope that's not considered spaming. I should have info on it up by the 18th of september 'o9. Did you know they did not renew Piazo's publishing rights for Dungeon or Dragon magazine? They put a whole bunch of people out of work for money!!!
Oh, sorry, I feel obligated to say that wasn't a "Buy Me" Plug either. I'll be giving it away for free to the people who I know (i.e. have visited me so I remember how to find them later). Anyways, in short, they both have their flaws but I have excepted 3.5's. So, if you want to play a good game stick with 3.5. Unless you're an idiot, 4.O(MG) IS NOT FOR YOU!
