Merlin took a deep breath and stirred lazily to awareness. He stretched, wiggling in the bed.
Today I am alive.
It was warm under the covers, toasty, even. The covers were mounded over them, and Arthur’s warm weight was pressed against his back. Merlin turned without looking.
Today, there are beautiful things waiting for me.
Merlin slitted his eyes open, a grin stealing over his face at what waited for him. Arthur was awake, his blue eyes fixed on Merlin with could only be described as tenderness. The sun was steaming in through the window, painting Arthur’s bare shoulders and gloriously tousled hair golden. Arthur reached over and traced Merlin’s cheekbone. Merlin sighed into it.
Today, I can change the world.
Some days, the words did nothing. Today they worked, lifting his heart and filling him with hope. He was, at heart, stubborn, and Merlin rather thought that being happy was a good thing to be stubborn about.
“Hey,” he said, leaning forward for a kiss.
“Mornin’,” Arthur replied, voice rough with sleep.
Eight years since the diagnosis, and he was still here. Later, he’d get up in front of a crowd and talk about how life was a gift. Some of them would be terrified, new to being HIV positive, some would be staunch supporters, old timers, and survivors of loved ones now gone. It would be hard, as it always was, but this was how Merlin entered the world.
And for now, he had this: Arthur, warm in his bed and his heart, with the sun breaking out from the clouds.
