Someone once asked me what grappa was. I said "You know roughly how white wine is made? They take all the grapes, whole, and mash them up, and suck out the liquid. The liquid is what they make white wine out of. The mush that's left over, the seeds and stems and skins, they let that ferment, and that's what they make grappa out of."
It's true, that's exactly what it is, but apparently this description makes it sound as nasty as it tastes.
