When an opinion piece in the local paper would claim that the Liberal party doesn't believe in democracy. It's a shock because the papers are owned by quite a rich, Liberal-supporting family:

I'll never forget Jean Chretien's response to the controversy over the Kyoto Treaty. He basically told reporters he wasn't going to work another term, nobody could kick him out, and he was going to do what he wanted. *muttergrumble*

That probably happened before I started following politics at all. It doesn't surprise me though. And unfortunately, he was right. No one could kick him out.
As much as I prefer Harper to the previous Liberal government, it worries me a bit that no other party would be able to take down the current government right now. When there's no real opposition, the potential for corruption explodes. We saw this very well from 1993-2006.

It happened just as I was starting to follow politics, and man, did it make me mad. The great potential for corruption is really ironic, considering accountability was Harper's big selling point. This is a true test of his mettle.
