Scott Adams and 'Night of the Living Doormen'

Scott Adams wrote about tipping and doormen and valets in his Dilbert blog. It sparked a ton of comments from readers, as you'd expect. Tipping is somehow a controversial subject, I guess. I have to tell you, I really don't like the whole tipping thing. Why pay someone again for doing what they are already getting paid to do? Clients don't tip me for creating their invoice or helping them with their invoicing questions. That being said, I don't stiff anyone either. I just still hate the whole concept. And I understand that with waitresses they get paid below minimum wage so they need those tips, but I don't agree with that practice either.

Yeah, I'd just rather the whole tipping concept would go away, too. I don't agree with the "clients don't tip me..." argument, though, because that's comparing professional office duties with face-to-face service providing, which I think is apples vs. oranges. STILL, though, I agree with you about not stiffing anyone while still hating the concept. Yes, we're paying someone some amount of money above their existing wage, which seems dumb, but the root of the problem is in the fact that those jobs are set up that way to begin with! If they would just pay waitresses and doormen, etc.,, the right wage to start with, and tell them you're forbidding tips (with a big sign in the front window), then that's how you cut down on the nonsense.
