I'm running Firefox 3.6.3 on a Mac, and when I open a link in a new tab, it goes right next to the current tab. I'm surprised that your Firefox behavior is different. Are you running an older version (say, Firefox 2)?
I vaguely remember them changing the default with Firefox 3, but it is possible that an extension kept the old behavior. I changed it myself because I like having the tabs open at the end (about:config =>browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent =>false).

Though I actually have 3.5.something on my work PC and it puts new tabs on the very right. Perhaps it's a 3.6 "feature".

Chrome places the new tab immediately to the right of the last tab spawned from the current tab -- I don't think domain names enter into it.
