Post this to hip_domestics hon and be sure to include if it's in Canada and as many other details as you can (the town etc) without anything too revealing.

Good luck.

the landlord's insurance company is going to be looking for any reason they can to say "no". what are they looking for the insurance to cover? contents of the house/personal belongings, days they miss from work, etc should be through a Renter's Insurance Policy that they as tenants should have. I pay $12 a month for mine. Things like clean-up, repairs, etc, should be under the homeowner's policy, I believe, especially with the cause of the fire being listed as it is.

I'm not an insurance agent, I've just been involved in too many stolen cars, burnt cars, broken into homes, etc.

Good luck to your friends! The situation is shit, but at least everyone got out safe :)

In the US, a renter needs his own renters insurance to cover their personal belongings. The landlord's homeowners insurance only covers the property itself. Not sure if its similar in Canada.
