I enjoyed the series, short-lived as it was, so I thought the books would be fun summer reading ( Read more... )

"Unfortunately, I think this has already gotten old for me. For you Dresden lovers out there, am I just being pissy?"

Yes. I think the first three books are kind of like a prologue. They set up reoccurring characters like the werewolves. Honestly, I never reread them when I do the series. I always start with 4.

Harry gets more hurt in the series, but not always. And man, three of my favorite characters haven't even appeared yet. No wait, four. I should write Archive fic with Kincaid. And Butters. And Mouse.

I'm so glad! I had latched onto these for my summer reading and was savoring working through a whole series, but these first three are getting me down! *g*

My perspective is this: Harry gets hurt a lot because of what he does. He's not immortal, and in some senses he's not even particularly talented at what he does. So I expect a great deal of butthurt.

That said, there are issues with his powers that I'm sure you'll notice. There are some good arcs that go through books and come to a close, which I like. I hate open ended arcs that seem to just keep going.

The best thing, IMHO is Butcher's style, which I think actually gets funnier as the books go along.

Also? I kind of hate Susan, and when she's gone, then it's better.

I thought it was only I felt that way! I totally agree this! It's not she is a bad character. It's just that she's kind of annoying and made Harry really depressed.

Not so far as I'm concerned. Despite the potential the books all seemed to be singing the same song and there really should be an Occam's razor for universe building--something like "Don't multiply paranormal entities beyond neccessity."

i've loved all the dresden books so far, but even if you don't, you at least won't have to worry about it devolving into sex-orgies a la anita blake at any time. that's a plus in my book.
