I confess I have not been online much, have been only marginally fannish for a long time, but I am a fanfic author of some renown in my small, dying fandom.  The oar I have to put in these roiling waters is that, IMO, the problem with the dialogue is that it is a Debate, not a discussion.  A discussion includes listening as well as talking,

I've just quit working for an archive which was overflowing with sexual assault cases, including those of children. One of the more interesting things I found is that I can actually track how attitudes have changed. Unfortunately, sometimes it seems to be happening far too slowly.

As a society, we do seem to take 3 steps forward, 2 1/2 back, don't we? And while some things *seem* to actually get worse sometimes (like the prevalence of child abuse), I think it's mostly that in today's instant information age, we are simply more aware of all the darkness out there than we used to be. It was always there, we just couldn't see it.

Of course, we can't warn for everything. I don't give a rat's ass about people's personal fandom squicks. I do, however, care about people. I actually care about them more than I care about my fiction, so the question boils down to: What do you care about?
